I have a client with a dog with early renal failure. I have tried RCW / Hills dried and wet, which the dog will not eat. The owner (Like most) is not willing to keep on putting the same food down as the dog will starve!

Eukanuba do a renal diet as well so could try this

Re: canine renal diets

I think you just have to bear in mind that this dog will not respond to treatment as well as most. If the dog is really fussy you'll just have to put him on a senior food. Probably better than a home diet.

As far as the metacam, I don't know of which NSAID is better than others. I asked at a webinar regarding my cat that's on it and they told me other types of medication, but it got me thinking about quality not quantity. I decided at that moment that I wouldn't take my cat off the metacam even if his kidneys started to fail and if they pushed him over the edge then so be it! I'm supprised your Vet doesn't know of alternatives?

If I remember correctly cats with renal failure can go for some years but dogs the symptoms are more severe and they usually only last months. Keep the dog comfortable, let him enjoy what he can and just help the owners throgh this hard time. Good luck with them.

Re: canine renal diets

Also forgot to mention - this dog is on metacam. Is there a more renal friendly anti-inflammatory drug?

Re: canine renal diets
Hi,

Oh dear :/ always a difficult one that.

I know of ipakitine which is added to renal food or their own food. could be a good choice here.

here's the companies website http://www.ipakitine.com/en/public/vactoquinol/ipakitine.html

ive also used renalzin. made by bayer. its a paste rather than a powder. however if i rmember rightly its only for cats.

hope that helps. aimee xx
both ipakitine and renalzin are phosphate binders so should only be used if the patient is hyperphosphataemic. these will not help with protein levels which are more key here.

have you tried purina nf, sometimes more palatable than hills/rcw

as for home cooked i would say chicken is preferable, obviously home cooked diets arent preferable due to being imbalanced, however there is a book available (for the life of me i can't remember what its called) which details pretty balanced diets, alternatively you could possibly try contacting the rvc as i know we have got specialised supplements for home cooked diets from them before now.
I dont think we need to use a phosphate binder yet, as the dogs levels are only slightly raised. Will have a look for the book suggested.

Re: canine renal diets
