Cruiciate ops
Cat Castrates & Speys - But prefer the castrates.
Cow C-Sections (Lovely

Re: Favorite ops???

Likewise. I'm a Head Nurse in a branch, with two student nurses under my wing, and although I do my fair share, I would be quite happy not to step into a theatre! Although I do find some surgery interesting if I am involved with the cases, I enjoy lab and medical nursing more!

I have done four GDV surgeries, so they are a really challenging case and really stretch your nursing skills to the limit and that's why I love those... nowadays I don't see them that often anymore!

I enjoy dentals, they're always fun! And cystotomies!

I've assisted a few times in surgery... One was for a fat bitch spay and that was scary as due to the amount of fat, a ligature slipped and she was bleeding out. Thankfully, I managed to find the artery and put my finger on it and showed the vet who tied it off! I was quite impressed with myself, especially I was shaking as well but managed to keep my finger steady!

Also this week, I assisted in unblocking a cat, who had struvite crystals in his bladder. I flushed the catheter while the vet advanced it down the urethra trying to unblock and initially it was unsuccessful and then I remembered placing them in sternum, placing a towel rolled up under their abdomen and lifting tail up, makes it somehow easier to unblock and it worked! Us RVN's are quite useful sometimes!!! :-D

Re: Favorite ops???

Not that fussed when it comes to surgery. Getting anorexic animals eating is the best :)

Re: Favorite ops???

I like cat spays and castrates . I'm not a fan of dentals, because of the mess and the unknown time length it may take.

If I'm completely honest, any surgical procedure with the dog weighing more than 25 - 30kg, as I get a bad back easily and it requires more effort to sort them out.

A complete cat day puts a smile on my face

Re: Favorite ops???

Saw my first ex lap today and found it fascinating, I love the surgery side.

Re: Favorite ops???

I have no interest in surgery at all. I do try to show an interest as everyone else at work is so enthusiastic but can't get excited about a hip replacement or a TPLO. I've simply memorised the kit list so i can set it out but not really bothered about what bit is used for which op etc.

I would be happy to spend all day in the lab or doing medical nursing.

If I had to choose i would say eye ops and cat castrates are my favourite- castrates because they are quick and no fuss and very little mess. I'm not squeamish of eyes. We dissected a horse eye at uni although it was optional and some people couldn't do it. I used to dissect enucleated eyes for the trainees t show them the anatomy on a regular basis. I have a vet friend who is an ophthamologist and took me under her wing as a 1st yr. Let me look in the eyes with an ophthalmoscope before and after surgery and explained what she was doing when operating. The only thing i don't like about eye ops is that you don't have access to the head which makes monitoring anaesthesia more difficult and with the vagal nerve stimulus problems it can be a bit scary.

I HATE orthopaedics. I think i was traumatised as a 1st yr by a fossil vet doing it old school- being aggressive with saws, drill etc. The air drill is my most hated piece of equipment- the noise of drilling into bone makes me

Re: Favorite ops???

[quote user="Steph Phillips"]

the very first op I watched up close as a work experience was retrobulbar abscess on a rabbit which had prolapsed the eye. I was told to sit still against the wall until I recovered and not to try and get up until I felt steadier. I felt a real lemon! and then it got worse very quickly - I said I felt sick and somebody hastily nudged the kickbucket in my direction and there was this bloody rabbit eye looking back at me!

my worst ever op of all time was 20 odd years ago and I remember it like yesterday.

I was assisting in what we thought was a linear foreign body removal in a 5 month pup. When we opened up the intestine it was a linear foreign body alright - it was a linear mass of live worms causing the obstruction. Give me medical cases any day

Oh, OK, my one phobia within the VN world is worms - I'm afraid I would probably have lost all professionalism, and run out the door screaming!

I seriously considered a change of career after meeting this puppy. - if every owner had to see what I saw (and handled) the sales of milbemax would soar.
