However. I have been umming and ahhing for ages about going red. I don't mean ginger, but like the colour on the advert at the start of "Glee"....
Now, I know I'd probably have

Re: Changing my hair colour!

Hi Katy,

All I can say is go for it!

I'm naturally dark blonde and a couple of years ago got fed up of constant highlighting. - I just took the plunge and went for a lovely chocolate brown colour. I'm quite fair anyway and feared it wouldn't suit me at all but was so so pleased with the results. - The hairdresser used a semi-perm colour so I'd recommend that if you're nervous- cos you've the fall back that it will wash out in a couple of months if you really hate it.

I have to say now I'm back to being blonde so I can excuse my dizziness- but new hair do or colour is a fantastic confidence boost.

Good luck

Re: Changing my hair colour!

Well, i've had my hair cut today, and i've had a skin test done....

So just need to book the appointment!

The hairdresser is a colourist and comes recommended, so we had a good chat about options.

She's going to do a base colour first on top of my highlights, and then we are going for a semi permanent warm red/brown, So it's not too drastic!

At least if I don't like it, I can change it back!

Bit excited now, lol!

Re: Changing my hair colour!

When I had my last major hair change, I found loads of photos on the internet, photographed them onto my phone and took them with me. The hairdressers all had a good giggle at the fact i was showing them various soap stars etc but I came away with exactly what I'd asked for so it worked!

Re colour - I've spent the past few years dark reddish brown and decided last year that i wanted to go dark blondish again as I had been some time earlier. I always dye mine myself as can't afford their fees these days and my hairdresser told me to spend a few months using a natural brown to tone down the red before adding any blonde, in order to avoiud the gingery/pink stage it can go and then when it was nearly there, she told me to use ash blonde rather than champagne or any other variety of blonde as ash apparently tones the red down further. Six months on and I'd now describe my colour as darkish blonde, where I wanted it to be although I have re-dyed it every 6wks during that time to help it on its way and have quite short hair so the regular trims also helped to get rid of the red from the ends quicker than long hair. Two weeks in the sun also helped recently as the dark mousey blonde faded further

I've also dyed my hair since I was about 17 ( 23 yrs!) so I could quite possibly be grey underneath by now

Re: Changing my hair colour!

I've got really dark brown hair, and I used to have two bleached panels which I would dye pink, blue or purple, depending on how I felt. I'm actually trying to convince work to let me have red panels now! I used stargazer dye, it's semi-permanent but actually lasts really well! It says on the box to leave it on for 20 minutes or something but I'd wear a shower cap and leave it on over night, and it would last for weeks :)

Re: Changing my hair colour!

If you're looking for bright colours to use on bleached hair i recommend www.beeunique.co.uk I use the special effects dyes which are fab!
Just been Trafford Centre and we were people watching whilst drinking our Starbucks..... think I know what colour I want. OH said to just sod it and go red, but I think i'll go brown first. Probably safer!

Ooh think I'll have to get it booked!

Can anyone recommend a good hairdresser over Wigan way?

Re: Changing my hair colour!
Lol! My friend got her hair coloured on Thursday, unfortunately the inexperienced hairdresser dyed her hairline brown! It's still not properly worn off!

I'd be well annoyed! Oops!

I think if i'm going for something as drastic as blonde to brown, I will have to go to the hairdressers..... When I was a student I went ginger instead of blonde, as I didn't leave the colour on long enough! Eek!
Yep! Done that too. I vowed never to home dye again. I have only once since then and it re-affermed my faith in using hairdressers. Going to hairdresser for this next one as wanting drastic cut too.

The only thing I hate about hairdressers is when you go in with an idea of what you want to do and how light you want to go and they go 'ooh I'm not sure that will work cos.....' and they make you change your mind. I am deterimined that will not happen this time, I will put my foot down. I've even located my blond photo's so I can say it does go that blond and it will suit me!

Re: Changing my hair colour!

Lol! Didn't see it happen and by the time I saw him washing it off it had turned some black hairs on his head ginger...... think my home dye was similar. Most of the neighbours hated him cos he was always pinching and knocking over bins, and cos they thought it was a different cat he was treated nicely for a change.

And just for those who are concerned I washed it off before he ingested it.

And thinking of home dying. If you're going to do it at home use vasaline on your skin around your forehead and ears to stop the skin going brown. The only thing I find when I dramatically change colour is you have to change your make-up to match. Subtle things like more or less bronzer, different colour blusher and eye make up, and changing the lipstick.

Like you said going darker will make your skin appear more white but that shouldn't be a reason not to do it.
Ohhh be careful with Red hair colour - it stains your hair and is hard to go back!

I've never actually coloured my hair red, but Stella (member on here) has.. she was red for a while and wanted to go back blonde - ended up pink & patchy with ginger bits in it - took her ages and lots of ££ to put it right.

xxx
Yeah red is hard to get rid of or bleach out but it's not hard to get rid of it, you just let it grow out. I'm naturally ginger but have been dyeing my hair since I was about 14 (I'm 28 now) and I have been every colour under the sun but the colour I feel I suit most are the darker colours. Even though I'm very pale skinned, black and dark red suit me more than the lighter colours.

I'd say go for it, if you don't like it just wait for it to grow out. But my hair grows really quickly so I never have any qualms about doing crazy things with it ... also, it's only hair so it's not the end of the world if something goes wrong. It's never permanent.

Re: Changing my hair colour!

Ohhh be careful with Red hair colour - it stains your hair and is hard to go back!
