My assignment on ethics is due next Thursday (9th June). From my college class notes i have this:

Utilitarianism
The greatest good for the greatest number of people
Morality based on what is useful to everyone

Deontology
An approach to ethics that determines goodness or rightness from examining the means used by the person.
From the Greek deon obligation duty

Thats how I understand it as well and how I wrote about it in my assignment - you may get better results on google if you type in duty ethics instead of Deontology and Consequentialism instead of Utilitarianism as these are what they are more commonly called in america (or so it seems by my google results)

From what i understand:

Deontology is whats done for the best of the animal irrespective of the consequences e.g not spaying a heavily pregnant queen despite the owners request as they are unable to look after the kittens

Utilitarianism is what is done for the best of the animal and owner by weighing up the consequences (for the greatest good) e.g spaying the heavily pregnant queen due to the unability of the owner being able to look after her and the kittens (what sort of life would the kittens have?)

Virtue from what i understand is what youd do as a good person. There is no right or wrong answer here as everyone is different. Some people would go ahead with spaying a heavily pregnant queen under the owners request, where as others would refuse point blank.

Sophie Pullen has written an excellent book called 'The Law, ethics and the veterinary nurse' which explains everything perfectly! You can buy it from Amazon or sometimes there are copies on ebay
