I know some of the degree courses include it as part of the VN degree already.

I did the small animal and equine as fairly easy really. It is useful as you don't have to get the vet out of a consult just to dispense frontline or drontal to a none client. We have benefitted as local pets at home only have 1 SQP so have to trn people away when she is not there so they come to us instead!! Mind you judging by the advice she gives out she didn't learn a lot from her training - doesn't understand flea lifecycles etc so they end up coming to us anyway for some decent advice!!! This is theproblem with things like this being sold with bad advice - people think the product doesn't work but it isn't the product thats at fault - she also likes to diagnose things and recently sent a client to us to buy treatement for his cat with sarcoptic mange - it actually had fleas!!!!!!

We don't have any SQPs as it's not really cost effective for our practice, the only NFA-VPSs we sell are normal frontline (and we sell much more frontline combo) and drontal, and if the animal has been seen the previous 12m our policy is they can prescribe under vets name, if not seen then its usually not too difficult for vet to pop into reception or on phone to authorise prescription.

When all the current POM-V flea/worming products become NFA-VPS then it may be a bit more worthwhile especially if our embryonic nursing clinics are more established by then.

I do think with the masses of pharmacology VNs do as part of their training that a RVN should automatically be SQP anyway. I had heard that this was in the pipeline perhaps for new students???

and in some other respects I just see it as another way to squeeze what little "tampax" money they can out of us nurses. (sorry fellas!)

I call it "tampax" money, coz nurses really don't earn enough to call it a salary and you can't support yourself and a.n other on the income that is provided.....it is pantz

I'm not sure, but don't quote me on that - afterall you do know what the VMD are like for changing drug classifications at short notice and excluding all VN's! Need I say anymore?!?

Just read the reply more here. I did self learn was realy worried not need to. The exam was the same as the example questions sent to me. And added to that you are given the mini noah to use during the exam. I threw 90% of the file away and learn the legal side and the drugs. you get sent the mini noah in the pack as well so by exam you know it well.

I am glad l did not pay for the pre lectures to be honest ok it may change but as of july last year that was what we had.

I did l rang up before l even agreed to order the exam to ask questions and about the cpd and was told that any cpd would do so long as it was relevant ie small animal if we have the sqp-c. Guess what it doesn't but they changed that AFTER l got the exam.

The much hyped online cpd.. isnt set up yet.(just informed me of that the other day)

If you have not told them you are going to a cpd they have accredited that will include points BEFORE you go then you do not get the points.

They may or may not notify you direct about upcoming cpd they may just put it in the magazine or may just put it online.

I was told that it was from october last year (A) stoping being a 2hr exam and turning into an all day exam and (B) compulsory from october for all vn's. That was a big part of the reason l sat my exam. Guess what and if you say no on both (A) and (B) scores you win the prize.

Oh and the one year of membership to amtra.. uh uhh nope you renew in l think it is november. Tough it is only paid for that year so if you paid for the exam in august sat exam in septemberyou pay your fees in november. So dig folks you have more money to find to renew that as well and l have yet to haqve anyone bother asking for it or finding a use for it.

Gee l just love life at times...

Thanks for the reply - I've just had a look at the website, and seen that;

AMTRA training can be undertaken as home based learning with two years from enrolment in which to qualify; taught courses are offered by some colleges and trainers on a commercial basis, and although they are highly advantageous, they are an "optional extra

Shall be ringing them tomorrow! Quite costly though!

Does anyone know of any low cost, home study courses a 2nd year, experienced SVN desperate for employment (and GREEENS) could do which would enhance their CV?

In practice - hmmm - erm well its ideal if you are thinking of doing the C-SQP, if you are thinking of doing the full whammy, then, you should ideally have access to farm animals, equines etc.

Probably wishful thinking, BUT, do you have to be in practice to do it? I am an out of work 2nd yr SVN trying to get as much experience / potentially good stuff on my CV as possible! I may have limited nursing in a mixed practice on the cards if that helps???

There are different classifications of SQP and these are the modules that must have been passed (hope this answers one of your questions. Depending on which version you study for and qualify as depends on the amount of retention fee you pay to AMTRA each year! Don't forget there is also CPD which must be done and this has to equate to a set number of points for each SQP type......I suggest then that you do your homework before embarkation!!!!!
