I 100% will be doing my VCA but will go and see what they are offering, also got interview for a dog warden position, also applied for PDSA VCA in Basildon so hope I get interview for that as they are willing to accept students. Been looking for two years, so finally things are looking up for me. Thanks for all advice, will definately go and see what they say.

Re: What does this mean?

First of all congratulations on getting the invite

I used to work at a practice where we ran open evenings periodically and invited prospective trainees to come along and meet the staff and see the building. It was an opportunity for not only them to see us but also for us to see them and how they interacted with us and other prospective trainees. Although it was a very artificial atmosphere it usually gave us a pretty good idea of those to keep on file and those that we didnt feel would fit in.This was one way of us weeding down hopefuls as we were only able to employ 1 or maybe 2 at best.

Maybe you have been invited to something similar?

Do bear in mind that some practices keep applications/letters asking about positions on file for a very long time. Maybe you could call them and ask if they want you to bring anything with you? that may provide you with a few more clues as to what the invite is about if you dont feel you can ask them outright

If you can get a decent inhouse training I wouldnt discount it especially if it allows you to complete your ANA

Re: What does this mean?

This sounds like (although it may not be!) something that some of the larger corporate groups do. They take on people and train them up the way they want to, to do a load of stuff, similar to student nurse training. HOWEVER as Nick says, it may not be the greatest way of doing things, this usually will not be a RCVS recognised qualification and in a secretly-filmed documentary a while back a certain group was exposed as allowing "trainee" nurses who were not receiving RCVS approved training to do things that they should not have been - they use the term "trainee" which people assume is equivalent to "student", but isn't. (P.S. Sorry everyone for bringing THAT up again!!!)

The experience you receive though would be very very beneficial to you if you do want to qualify formally and I am sure would help you to gain another position in the future. Don't be put off by anything we have said but please be careful, and aware that there are a number of things (ie taking blood) that a student nurse is allowed to do that a "trainee" is not (even if the practice says so!!) legally, and be careful to protect yourself in case of problems.

Of course this may not be the case at all, just wanted you to be aware of it. Go to the evening, ask loads of questions, it shows keeness and I am sure they'll talk you through the position fully. I would say please don't give up the ANA training though if you can at all help it.

Really good luck!! Let us know how it goes!

I don't think you can replace a formal qualification. Its good that you are enrolled to do ANA/VCA qual. This would probably not involve any formal qualification.
