Beautiful sp span came in RTA, got carried away chasing a bird and ran straight in front of a car. Happened pretty much outside of surgery so owner rushed him in. He was initially bleeding heavily from his mouth

Re: Bad day!

What an awful day you had! I know exactly how you feel, we have a big Bouvier come in (from winner of Crufts line so a lovely dog!) and they had been in a 'dog friendly' part of the garden whilst they we packing up their house to move. Somehow she managed to jump and impale herself on a steel rod!

When she came to us she was covered in blood and had a punture wound in her groin. We opened her up hoping it was just the femeral artery but she had gone right up and punctured the iliac artery too, she was on fluids, plasma expanders and everything else we could think of but there was just nothing more we could do. What made it worse was the owners were watching the whole time and the wife was just howling!! It was so upsetting and something I will never forget, the whole practice looked like a blood bath.

It is true that you can't save them all, and it is horrible if you end up with what if's but I guess the biggest 'what if' is... what if the owner had the dog on a lead, what if they had double checked the 'friendliness' of the garden area... although we can fix things sometimes, the owners can very often prevent entirely.

Please don't think that anything was your fault and keep your chin up! It's not all bad but sometimes these days just happen, luckily not too often in my case.

Re: Bad day!

I'm so sorry to hear about your day yesterday Nicky. It's awful when things like that happen. Just awful.

I know you feel helpless but from your description, it sounds like there was literally nothing anybody could do for him. You did your best and that's what counts. When things like that happened at a previous practice, my wise 'old'' head nurse just used to say "you can't save them all Dee". She was of course right but it doesn't stop the "what if's" running around in your head.

When I am consumed my "what if's", my oh so helpful fiance tells me that "if your uncle had boobs, he'd be your ant". Yup, he's right too (pains me to say it )

Hope you have a better day today.
