It is interesting to see how breeds have changed. Below 1st photo is of my breed (Kleine Münsterländer) taken 1906, 2nd is an photo of a dog of my breed born in the 70's and 5 generations on my own dog today. Not too much difference other than the increase in ticking in the coat. The breed today is still very much in the hands of working folk though.

Look at the back legs on the GSD and the boxer looks more like a Pitt bull. It' s really interesting to see how much people have messed with genetics over the years.

Wow, what a great link, thanks for sharing I particularly liked the poem on page 133, really sweet. Also really pleased to see my breed on page 73, named "Sheepdog of the Abruzzes" but now called the Maremma Sheepdog. The name may have changed but the dogs look exactly the same!

has anybody ever visited here? I have planned to quite a few times but never got round to it. There is a gallery or section on dog breeds and I notice one of the ones mentioned in the book link which is now extinct there is an example there. Its called a happa which is related to the peke

That's a really good link! Can't believe how different some look. Love the Labrador in there. The cocker looks like a springer would these days and sheltie is like a mini border collie instead of a mini rough collie.

Had a good read of "The gun and coursing dogs of the world" section (pg 121), very interesting. Can't believe how much certain breeds have evolved since the early 1900's!
