I'm due to start the full-time FdSc Veterinary Nursing degree in September at Myerscough, in which I will be in placement for 70 weeks over the three years that i'm there, including the entire second year.
I was just wondering from others who

Re: Veterinary Nursing Degree - Placement question

Hi Sarah,

I'm a 2nd year on the degree course at NTU, and ours is set up into blocks, eg one month in lectures, 3 months in placement, which by the sounds of it yours is too. Placement dates are set by the Uni, with a 2 week holiday in summer that you choose to have when suits you and your placement. Any time spent working in a training practice will count, whenever it is.

If your uni is anything like mine, they will find your placement for you as they have links to local practices. I'd advise speaking to your course leader about who co-ordinates the placements :) You may have to find your own in second year (I did) but I basically sent a mail blast out to all the training practices in my area and got 3 offers the same week! Its good to go to different practices, ive seen 2 so far and they couldnt be more different!

Good luck! the degree is amazing, im loving it :D

Nikki

middlesex arranged the placement for me so that part was easy. i have decided to stay at the same practice as it is large and the nurses are well respected but i did locum elsewhere during last summer and it is interesting to get an insight into what happens elsewhere. you can work as much of the year you are in placement as you want but you may have exams so might want time out to revise. also, certain amounts of weeks are allocated to certain modules so whilst it is worth getting ahead of the game in terms of weeks and hours you may need to do a certain number of weeks for a later module so whilst good to gain experience you cannot add weeks in the hope of finishing final year placement too early.

with regard to your last question my practice are happy for me to be there whenever. i am currently in a year of lectures but am back in placement now (exams just finished) to gain additional experience. if you make sure you contribute and become a valued member of the team you will always be welcome!
