My cat is nearly 3 years old, female (neutered) DSH. 3 months ago I moved in with my partner. She settled in well and bonded well with him. About a month ago she started chasing him into the kitchen every time he got up to there. I like to think it's just on a back-burner for now!

You can contact me on here or via my e-mail- jenny.978behaviour@hotmail.com

I am happy to give free advice to anyone on this site regarding their pets, but if I started getting, in effect, referrals for members of the public, then I would have to look at this as business.

Hi Nick,

Yes, from the extra info sounds even more likely to be predatory play.

If your cat didn't like your partner she would not rub around his legs. He is obviously just more attractive as prey than you are (or maybe seen by your cat as more playful)! My cat initiates play with my husband by biting his elbow, but he has never done this to me. So cats can show different behaviours towards different people in the home.

A course I attended discussed a cat behaviour study which concluded that cats needed to go through their predatory sequence at least 20 times per day just to keep them sane. You need to try and replicate this. A cat is hard-wired to hunt. It has to do this, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the individual.

It may be a good idea for you to write out a list of all the things the cat does that provide her with the opportunity to raise her mood-state (ie make her happy). Look at the time she spends per day doing each thing. The list will include things like playing, interacting with owners, being cuddled, eating, sleeping etc etc. As your cat can not go outdoors she is missing hunting, exploring, exercising, interacting with other cats, problem-solving (eg how do I get into that garden past that dog!), freedom etc, etc.

Does your list of behaviours compensate for all these lost (stimulating) activities in terms of both time and level of stimulation? It is not easy. Often we spend 10 mins or so playing with our cat with the same toys and think that is enough. Our cats may think otherwise!

The way to test if the cat is trying to increase her predatory opportunities is to increase her daily stimulation (especially anything to do with hunting behaviours) and see if the attacking behaviour diminishes. I would suggest-

Daily playtime of at least 20mins (or 2x10mins)

Rotate toys so that she is not playing with the same toys each day

Play with her with the toys so you can simulate prey behaviour

Use tunnels, boxes, large paper bags etc during the play

Leave her with new and interesting things to play with while you are out

Put dry food in a cat ball for her to play with rather than feed in a bowl

Food can also be scattered around the home for her to find

Encourage her to chase balls (foam or ping-pong are good)

Maybe make a climbing frame for her to climb / jump on

Anything else you can think of- you know her best!!

See how you get on.
