I think what everyone has said so far is right tbh!! My understanding of APL is as Judy said, that it can be used for anything as long as you are satisfied by the same R/C/V/S/A criteria. Also if a student has previously acheived CU2 and CU5 elsewhere they don't need to do them again (if they are 'current'), and I am currently using APL to start a student on Level 3 before receieving the Level 2 cert a she has limited time on a placement. We're just starting the portfolio as normal and then when she receives the cert will write a statement detailing what evidence has been collected to this date and that it satisfies reliable/valid etc acheivement of (insert occupational standards covered so far here!)

Re: APL evidence

The student in question is not employed at the practice, or the other branch, which she has collected the cases, she is on a full time course.

The other surgery branch is a TP and its common for the occasional student, from this full time course, to turn to collect difficult cases - they specialise in stuff - so it would have been very easy for the student to go to the TP.

I was under the impression APL (advance prior learning) meant that you could collect difficult cases before you enrolled or were moving from Level 2 to Level 3 but not got your certificate yet.

I don't understand it - my VNAC has the same idea as me - but this student is under a different VNAC and they have different ideas!

Re: APL evidence

I thought Approved Prior Learning was collected in the time between passing NVQ2 and receiving the certificate. Cases can be collected and signed to say yes it did happen, then they are assessed against the standards once the certificate has been received. That was how my IV explained it.

But no help to the original question anyway!

Re: APL evidence

Bit confused here - thought APL meant prior learning?? So how can getting these cases from branch surgery now when enrolled a SVN be APL? If perhaps had got cases prior to? Can understand guide dog bit provided meets criteria etc. One of the practices i work in isnt a TP yet so does this mean my potential student can collect cases now (rare, specific type ones like blood transfusions) and count them as APL?? How does that fit with the 2 week rule?? Too many questions - will ring IV

Re: APL evidence

Its quite amazing how different people have different understandings of APL. It even differs depending on which VNAC is spoken to.

Re: APL evidence

My understanding of APL is that it can be used in any unit providing you can still prove all the requirements of evidence- i,e that it is reliable, current, valid, authentic etc.) So for example if you had worked at a breeding centre (such as for guide dogs or dogs for disabled) and had to advise owners on the care of a pregnant bitch on a regular basis you could use this as evidence. You would need a statement from former employer etc and assessor may need to ask you questions about whether you really do know. So in theory you can use evidence from anywhere- but the key is the reliability of evidence. Contact your VNAC to ask them about specific cases

Re: APL evidence

As far as its been explained to me by our IV you can only use APL for the 2 core units (CU) as these are covered in all NVQs. So if they have done another NVQ in another subject/industry you can include this APL.

Re: APL evidence

Haha isnt it great when they do that!Well in that case she would need witness statements anyway??!

Re: APL evidence

SVN not employed - just turned up to collect needed cases - assessor didn't know anything about it!

Re: APL evidence

Agree -i would have thought it wouldnt if the svn is already in employment at the non tp.However if it was me and i wasnt sure i would be on the phone to my iv asking as the last thing anyone wants is for the evidence not to count esp if diff cases to collect!

We have non tp branches but its only our employed svns that go out and its not very often but even then its mainly reception work that is done

Re: APL evidence

It's not for me - I'm just being nosey!!
