Personally i would rather be paid overtime than have time in lieu, as it is difficult to get your time in lieu off due to busy practice, short staff etc.

Maybe you should ask your head nurse to mention to the person interviewing people that they are not giving out correct information as they have misled you.

Thanks for your responses guys!

I brought this up with my head nurse but despite what was said in my interview it looks like all overtime will be taken in lieu. Guess it's better than nothing!

That is the most ridiculous statement I've heard in a long time. The two aren't directly related in this case. If the practice is busy enough to need staff to stay late then the costs are being paid, and if the practice is trying to manage on too few staff then it is a management problem.

at my last practice we were only allowed time off in lieu and could only accrue time in half hour increments

I think you need to speak to the person who interviewed you and have it clarified in writing if possible.

At my interview i was told bank holidays were paid and time and a half and a day off in leiu, then the practice manager told me after i started that they were only paid at time with no day off in leiu!

Turns out the practice manager was wrong but i made sure i got it in writing after so that if i was ever paid incorrectly i had it to fall back on.

You dont want to work loads of overtime and not get paid or be able to take the time off in leiu especially if its the kind of practice where you never leave on time

PS I should've said that the above applied for odd hours here and there - obviously an entire extra day/shift we got paid for (or I wouldn't have done it!)

At the practice I'm currently in, we get the choice of time and a half pay or time off in lieu (if quiet/convenient enough which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but if we haven't taken it back in lieu by next payday, we automatically get it paid). However, this is the first practice I've worked at in 20yrs+ where we got anything at all. In all the others, it was just expected as part of our salary so I'd be gratfeul for either as long as you get something!

It's probably why they're hiring more staff. Just try to get away on time and take the the time out. It's important for all the nurses to try and get that time back if that is the case. Then if that leaves themshort staffed the owners will have to pay to keep the staff doing the overtime.

I had a quick word with the vet about it when i found out, but unfortunately the practice manager and head nurse were not working so i couldn't quiz them. Another nurse who started just before me also said she was under the impression that we were paid for any overtime done, as she was told this during her interview too. The vet was saying that the problem with paying for overtime is that the client is not being charged any extra for the nurses/vets time, and therefore would leave the practice out of pocket. I see what you mean with the problem of hours racking up causing others to acrue more! Nightmare!

We get paid for any over time we do, its automatically done when we write our hours down on time sheets, after 6pm and for weekends.

I would suggest that you go to your practice manager and explain that you were under the impression from your interview that you would be paid for overtime and not be given time off instead and see what they say.

We can either take it as paid overtime @time and 1/4 or take it as time off in lieu if conveinent. The trouble with time off in lieu if people are racking up large amounts like 72hrs mentioned is fitting it all in, often causing others potentially to acrue more! Have you asked the person/people who interviewed you to clarify, it might be worth saying that you were under impression it was paid etc and as haven't signed contract yet state that you would rather be paid for it?
