I am in the process of possibly rehoming a lovely kitten. I just wanted people's opinions on having two cats... I have a one year old Bengal x Tabby female neutered who is just the most affectionate and wonderful cat and I feel now is the time

Re: Two cats?

For what it's worth, I wouldn't introduce another kitten/cat to an oriental breed. They may in the end tolerate each other, or the Bengal may be dominant and lead the kitten a "dog's life". I have two Asian Burmese males from the same litter and one is definitely more assertive and sometimes a bully to his brother. I would only ever have one again.

Re: Two cats?

Thanks for everyone's advice! Decided to wait a while. I need to focus on getting Lister to lose some weight! She has been on Hills Vet Essentials Young Adult and I got a shock when I weighed her a few days ago! 4.86kg! Swift look at the back of the food, I had been feeding her well below the recommended grams per day as she was neutered and a house cat but it has 398 calories and 19 something of fat!!!

She is now being gradually introduced to Hills Indoor Cat light dry food!!! So we will see how that goes!!

Re: Two cats?

I have a 3 year old male who is a house cat (I live in a flat). I took on a new kitten that was brought into the practice and they got on straight away. Never had any problems with either of them.

Re: Two cats?

I have a huge bengal named Hagrid who is content to live with any waif / stray that I have brought home. Until recently I had a really elderly stray and Hadrid used to curl around him to sleep. I think it depends on the individual as my previous bengal was the same. They were both from Bengal rescue.

Re: Two cats?

I have a moggy and a Bengal. The DSH was there first and the Bengal came 2yrs later. It was hell for the first couple of months and tollerable for the next few months after that - I was on the verge of rehoming the Bengal who was an adult rescue cat when things just seemed to click and they started getting along. The Bengal has big potential to be a bully but now they have settled down most of the time and do play together quite well and have turned into partners in crime rather than opponents. I am in no doubt tho that if I was to introduce another cat Morris would probably have a bloody good go at killing it!

Re: Two cats?

I have 2 bengals, and wouldn't dream of adding another cat to the group. My female HATES other cats, I'm suprised she allows her own son to stay half the time! (they have their moments) and to be honest, due to health issues I expect her to outlive him :(

Yours might be different, I've known Bengals to accept other cats, I've worked for breeders over the years, just introduce them right! Seek advice from cat behaviourists, take it slow, scent transfer, they might never be best friends, but they might learn to live togther. :o) good luck!

Re: Two cats?

I agree with steph and niknocks, it may take a few months for them to get on and some cats never like other cats. Bit like humans in that respect.

Re: Two cats?

It will all depend, unfortunately no one can predict how the cats are gonna get along, I know that there is no way I could introduce anything older than about 12-16 weeks as my older female would just try to kill it constantly however anything younger and she is hissy spitty for a bit and then calms down, within a week of getting my younger two she was on my knee with them both curled up round her, she also let the little boy try to suckle! I know have a nice household of 4 cats, not necessarily a group of 4 cats as my big girl is still very much her own cat and prefers my company over the others but hey ho.

The other thing with mine is, when I go up to my parents the younger two come with me as I want them to get used to travelling (something I never did with the older 2 and they get travel sick) when I come back the older 2 are a bit hissy again but after 24/48 hours everything is fine again and we get the whole mutual grooming going on again...very odd lol

Re: Two cats?

It took my 2 a month of constant fighting to finally settle down and now they love each other, it was the best thing i ever did getting a friend for my little boy although at the time i did think i would have to get rid of the newcomer as they just fought night and day for a whole month and drove me to my wits end!

Now though, they play constantly, groom eachother, sleep together and my boy who was a lovely cat but would play bite hands and feet all the time doesnt do the unwanted behaviour anymore and is a much nicer cat as a result.

Deffo do the slow intro things tho and good luck
