Just wondered if any VNs out there took a career break for whatever reason and then went back to nursing? Have just had my first child and am thinking of taking more time off than just my maternity leave... but am also wondering how difficult

Re: Career Break?

Thanks everyone! Is good to know it's something I can hopefully go back to if I do have a break, would probably try and get some work exp before going back just to boost my confidence again

Re: Career Break?

Congrats on baby :)

I've been on "maternity leave" for 14 years and am just getting back into VN now. Bit different for me though as I'd only passed Part 1 when I had my first son, so I have to start from scratch. I've been at college for a year, and like the others don't feel as if I've been away at all. I still have brain cells, despite what they say about motherhood causing you to lose them !!!!!

Only you can make the decision. Some mums need to work to stop them going mad at home. Others would go mad if they left their baby. There's no right or wrong answer - you know what's right for you, and don't let anyone pressure you into making a decision you're not happy with.

While on maternity leave I did let my registration lapse, but it was then a bit more expensive to renew it (£90 rather than £60 i think). While on maternity I tried to do a couple of free online cpd's to keep up to date, although I found that i slipped right back into the job. It is amazing how much you remember, even when your not using it!

To ease the transition back I did a couple of days here and there (i think you are entitled to, up to 10 days per month?). I think they were called something like 'back to work days'. I did find these quite valuble to do.

Anything else i can help with, then message me

Most of all, enjoy motherhood, it's a wonderful experience.

Re: Career Break?

I've just got back into Vet Nursing after a 3 and a half year break. I didn't keep my RCVS registration up, only relisted after I'd decided I wanted to get back into it.

If you leave it for more than 5 years, the RCVS states that you have to do so many hours of voluntary VN work to get you back into the swing of it. Since I was only out for 3.5 years I didn't have to do this. The practice that took me on, knew about my break and were willing to give me the chance to get back. At the beginning, it was difficult but it's amazing how quickly some things come back. I've been back for just over 3 months now and, aside from little things, it's like I've never been away.

I had to remind myself on some things and relearn techniques, but you'd have to relearn some stuff for any new job since every practice has different policies.
