Im 26 and have recently graduated from the Royal Veterinary College with a BSc in Veterinary Sciences and MSc in Wild Animal Biology, and I am now determined to train as a veterinary nurse! I am searching every practise within 20 miles and I'm

Re: Trainee Vet Nurse in Solihull!

Yes you would need to find a placement but only for 2 days and they do not pay you so it may be easier to find. I totally understand what you mean regarding needing a job to pay for rent etc though, I moved from the midlands last year so would have to move back to do the course leaving my bf here, moving back in with my parents and having no income whatsoever, something I am not over keen to do but, I do really want this career. I shall just have to wait and see what the summer brings and hopefully I will have come to a decision by the end of it. I mostly look on here for trainee positions to be honest, none of the other sites have seemed to have helped me that much but I will send the links to you anyway, I send my CV and covering letter out every 6 months and try and get as much experience as possible in the mean time. x

Re: Trainee Vet Nurse in Solihull!

Thanks for your reply, unfortunatly I can't afford to do a second degree and now work placements are my only option so going to keep trying for a trainee position! fingers crossed!!!!!

Re: Trainee Vet Nurse in Solihull!

Hi Emma

Thankyou for you reply! If you did the colege course at solihull college wouldnt you still need to find a placement in a vets? I think I am going to hold out for trainee positions just because i have a huuuge amoutn of uni debt and would need a job to pay for rent etc, they are so hard to come by as you say though. Do you know of any good sites that advertise vet trainee jobs besides this one? Good luck and let me know what you decide!

I am in a simular situation and have been looking for a trainee position since last October, they are incrediably hard to come by so I started looking into carrying out the full time RCVS Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma on a voluntary basis rather than in paid employment. Both Solihull and Warwickshire college run this course, 3 days a week in college and 2 days on a voluntary placement at a veterinary practice. I have applied for both but am torn as to whether to hold out for a training position or undertake this 2 year course, I am the same age as you which means I am "too old" to get the course funded (you need to be 25 or under) so will need to finance it myself (approx £850 per year plus another £750 exam fees). However it does mean I will be qualifed in 2 years and ready to find a permanent job afterwards whereas if I wait who knows when a trainee position may come up. I have discovered there are lots of pro's and con's so am still making my decision. In the meantime I am volunteering a local veterinary practice to gain expereince and hopefully get "a foot in the door", I have known several people that have gained trainee positions through carrying out work experience first so it may be worth thinking about.

Good luck and feel free to pm me if you need any other info on the course, I have been looking into it for quite a while so if I can help I would be more than happy to pass on the info I have about them.

I would check out the BVNA website for more information on training as a nurse. You WILL need to do some formal training if you want to become a veterinary nurse irrespective of your qualifications. They are very useful indicators of your interest in animals but, iunless your course also formally covered the VN syllabus and you were awarded the relevant qualifications in veterinary nursing you will still need to undertake this. The good news you should find it easier going given your experience.

I don't know of any jobs going in the Solihull area - sorry!

Louise

Re: Trainee Vet Nurse in Solihull!

There are many other threads on this topic, trainee VN places are like gold dust with many many applicants for each job. You should be in good stead to get the job with your previous qualifications but trainee jobs rarely come available.

The other option is to do the degree in Veterinary Nursing which will allow you to qualify without needing a trainee position.

Otherwise all you can do is send your CV to every practice in the area and beyond in the hope that one practice has a trainee position come available.
