Do as much of the paperwork as you can before involving lawyers - they charge through the nose! (but you probably already know that). Try and write down everything that needs doing and just work your way through the list, prioritise if you can - set yourself mini goals each day and it isnt so daunting. I know it can seem that the mountain of stuff to be done never gets any smaller but it will - just keep chipping away at it till it gives in.

Maybe the colleague who made that remark on facebook has never experienced a loss? Maybe when they do they will appreciate more how this affects those that were close - hopefully people will be more understanding of them than they have been of others, or maybe they will get a taste of their own medicine?

I was in this situation when my dad died - although he owned his house there was still a lot of pressure from the lawyers to get it cleared and stuff readied for sale. For me it was as if I didnt have the time to grieve until the immediate paperwork and the funeral were over, its difficult to put emotion on the back burner (and I wasnt that good at it and I dont advise it) but thats what the insurance and other businesses expect you to do so that they can do their job, theres no time for sympathy in business . I left my previous job over this - same company coincidentally

I couldnt have got through it without the help of a few close friends because there was certainly no help from the family

unfortunately thats not the way councils will work - at best they will charge an extra weeks rent at worst an extra month.

Not a surprise death is a nusense to big company's very inconvenient l have learned the hard way. You have to kick back at them or they will walk over you.

err she can just do a basic save for word documents l meant any documents she has to pass on that her mum has or Diane has been given in paper form and there is a lot photo copy those and keep them and where possible send copies rather than originals and if have to send original send it registered

Hi,

Don't print/photocopy. "Print screen" it. Hold down "ALT" and "Prnt scrn" together and then open up a word document or a powerpoint document (my favoured option) and then click "paste".

It wll take a copy of the whole visible page on your computer.

Diane if l can help at all let me know am pretty experienced at this now unfortunately. Would say p/copy everything and date it and if need register it to send and as for person wipe them off your facebook if they are on it.

Sorry to hear of your loss. As for the facebook comment...that is just disgusting! Ignore it as best you can and try not to let it get to you. We lost my nan last monday night so know what you mean about bank hols delaying things, the funeral isn't until next weds. Thinking of you x

Unless you feel up to it I'd advise putting everything else off until after the funeral if you can. We found it all got too much - banks, solicitors, insurance people, etc, etc. Sometimes it helps to be pro-active to keep your mind occupied, but do allow yourself some you-time to grieve and just remember your mum.

I'm sure the facebook incident will be a one-off from someone's who's not suffered a loss. Hope the rest of your colleagues are more understanding.

Thanks. Mum died last week and I was off work on holiday anyway. Yesterday was my first day back but because of the easter break we couldn't do much as everyone official was closed.

Diane, you're amazing - that fact that you've been going into work at all is incredible. I lost my dad at Christmas so I know what's involved.

one friend saying to another how so and so's boyfriend was too good for her - when all the time so and so was on the same friends list

I happen to have a vets4pets company handbook here as i start work for the company on Wednesday.

The exact reading is...

Compassionate Leave

For immediate family members the entitlement will normally be 5 working days (excludes Saturday) paid leave following the death of the family member. Further time off will be allowed, based on unpaid leave for a reasonable period of time to be agreed by the partner/other directors.
