It will mean that I am going to be a clinical coach, just wondered if any other clinical coaches could give some words of advice on how to approach things

Re: Clinical Coach

I preferred the portfolio if im being honest as there is far more work involved with the NPL as other posters have said.

There is a lot involved in becomming a TP, but if the practice is up for it, then its definately a good thing for you and your potential student
I feel like I take work home, my laptop is full of caselogs I've written for my students

It might be worth sitting down with management to discuss what is actually required to support the student such as allowing them their 3 hours off rota per week (RCVS regulation), regular times to sit together and perform tutorials, times to demonstrate tasks to the student etc.
No necessarily 3 hours off rota, its 3 hours with the clinical coach for blended learning tasks

make sure everyone is understading of what the NPL involves before any decisions are made though as if time isn't given, the student will suffer and you will be driven mad!

Re: Clinical Coach
Portfolio was a case of sitting with them, discussing the standards and packing them off with a plan to find cases and write about them, including the bold type etc. A1's had to just mark the work and sort out the front sheets.

lol, I've done so many direct observation/assessor narritve to help my students!
I am trained as a clinical coach, but as yet have no students, as the one's I'm dealing with are still doing portfolio! I feel like I take work home, my laptop is full of caselogs I've written for my students, as I remember being like them and stuggling with my day-to-day work as well as college and portfolio!

Re: Clinical Coach

Hi Nikki

Thanks for the info. To be honest when I was an A1 assessor my student was pretty hopeless so I ended up doing the majority of her work anyway but that was in by previous practice where their were 2 other A1 assessors who couldn't be bothered to support me or the student. Current practice we have one vet, practice manager/nurse and another nurse. The practice manager/nurse has said she will help me if necessary and give me time off rota to work with student, vet will be helpful but I have a feeling the other nurse will be about a much support & help as a chocolate fire guard.

Haven't even met the potential student yet, so we will have to wait and see how things go.

Thanks again

Re: Clinical Coach

Hi Philippa,

If you have been an assessor before then it's a bit of a stange move over if I'm honest! Students don't have to write as much but you still have paperwork to do like previously (tutorials, skill match, annual leave etc). I feel like I'm doing more of the work than the students at times!

Personally I find the NPL alot more like hard work. Having to demonstrate things to the student, them show you back and then the CC logs this BEFORE the student can actually get on with logging their own experiences.
Portfolio was a case of sitting with them, discussing the standards and packing them off with a plan to find cases and write about them, including the bold type etc. A1's had to just mark the work and sort out the front sheets.

I find the NPL rewarding as my students are progressing really well but I know many other CC's who are finding it hard to get the right amount of time with their students.
All a bit swings and roundabouts.

It all depends on how you can manage your time and if you will get time 'off rota' with your student to log work otherwise many evenings will be spent at home logging things......
