It's quite a big nest! Normally I would be delighted but I'm concerned about what will happen when my dogs start hanging about in the dog house. The dog house

Re: Anyone know about Robins?!

[quote user="miranda luck"]

Feeling terrible about the whole situation ... I called a few bird specialist orgs. Given the situation, they all advised 'blocking' the bird out and providing other nesting options at the building nest stage. The basis for this decision was that once the dogs started hanging about the nesting would 'fail' either at eggs or chicks.

Dont feel bad, im sure they will find somewhere else. And if thats what you have been advised to do then you do what you feel is best

Blocking the area would be my advice too Miranda. Also if the birds did raise young and nestlings fell or flew to the floor the dogs might harm them - accidently or otherwise.

This will probably happen even if they nest elsewhere in the garden as i imagine the fledglings will be on the ground at some point when the dogs are around. Its getting to that time of year where we get clients bringing baby birds in that they have found that they want us to rescue. And also i have to watch out of my window feeling helpless as the crows pick the pigeon chicks out of the neighbours chimney one by one.
Robins are not that shy and quite socialble so they do tend to build in inappropriate areas. Im sure if she lays her eggs soon then the chicks will have flown by the summer? I would let them nest if you can as their are not that many robins around compared to other garden birds. Can you put something to prevent the dogs getting close to the nest? If not you just have to let nature run its course, as im sure their will be neighbouring cats keeping eye on the activty too, unfortunately.

The male robin has a bright red breast and the female more dull red/brown if you want to know which is which.

Re: Anyone know about Robins?!

I took a peek and no eggs.
usually removing the nesting stuff just the once is sufficient for mine but you do get the odd awkward one who will have another go - have never had one come back after the second removal. They have plenty of places to nest so I am not depriving them - I have one building in a watering can at the moment in the greenhouse and the wren has been building in the post box for the last couple of weeks.

Re: Anyone know about Robins?!

i don't know much about robins, but we had some robins nest in a cupboard that contained the electricity meter and lightswitches at the riding school where i used to work. people were constantly in and out of the indoor school, the cupboard was right by the door as you went in. they didn't seem bothered by all those people or horses! the chicks fledged after 14 days in the nest tho so they weren't there for long. were so cute i have some videos of them on the day they fledged, so cute
