Puppy pads under or on top of a Vetbed?

At a congress lecture a few years back the sugeon/nurse taking the lecture advised that puppy urine pads be placed underneath a vetbed when nursing a recumbant, uncatheterized patient.
The understanding for this was that the vetbed will hold the pad

Re: Help!! Thanks for the response!

I didn't mean to imply that we don't wash out vetbeds! we do every time there has been an 'accident'.

Pleased to see everyone agrees with me!!

i put pads on top if d+ v+ as that tends to stay on the surface of the vetbed and its easier to throw d and v in the bin rather than have to wash out.

But if you are trying to get urine away from the patient then u should put the pad under the vetbed, but the bottom of the vetbed will still be wet and need washing.

Yea, I would agree with that. But to be honest, I have rarely had the luxury of being at a practice that uses inco pads.. so never really thought about where to put them! lol

You're right they are not cheap, and are deffo a luxury in some places. We havnt always used them, but glad we do now, they are great.

We order ours in bulk from vetdirect, works out a hell of alot cheaper than the ones from nvs our wholesaler.

Re: Help!!

Snap! V+ and d+ tends to stain vetbed as well so incont pads prevents this. Also, if patients are in isolation we soak bedding in Trigene for hours so if changing whole bed each time v+/d+ when they're doing it every hour would not be able to keep up with washing!

Re: Help!!
Oe of my pet hates is incontinence pads on top of the vet bed. IMO it is often done to save on washing and not done to improve the welfare of the patient and they never keep the patient as dry as vet beds.

[/quote]

In my case it was ignorance, and lack of brain power - every piece of bedding gets boil washed between patients (well 97 degrees as thats as hot as the washing machine goes!)

Do people really re-use bedding without washing if there has been an incontinence sheet on top?

Re: Help!!
Until my current job, I've always worked in places that used collection systems more times than not, those drainage grid thingies, and had a team of nurses on inpatients, 24/7, so it was never really an issue - we just changed the vetbed.

At my current practice, we don't have those luxuries, and so we do use incontinence sheets along with vetbeds - and since it has been the done thing, I've always put the sheet on top of the vet bed...
