my border collie has cut one of his pads open, it's not bleeding but you can see the pink tissue underneath- does it need stitching or will

Re: dogs cut his pad....

Good news - glad it healed without many £££s spent!

A lot of vets seem keen to suture pad injuries but personally I have not found suturing does much to shorten healing time. But each to their own.....

Re: dogs cut his pad....

just an update to say thanks- with my manuka honey bandages he's healed up nicely and is running round like an idiot again! thanks for the advice x

Re: dogs cut his pad....

thanks guys, he is quite happy for me to poke him around so think i'll keep him clean and bandaged and hope it heals soon- he's going stir-crazy without walks but if i take him to the field he'll be straight in the river! cheers xx

Re: dogs cut his pad....

My dog did this last week!! She's an extremely boisterous boxer so i was quite worried about healing. She had one single suture popped in, bandaged for ten days, and changed the bandage at least every two days. Put on a buster collar as she destroyed the first bandage! And shes been on antibiotic inj's for the last 12 days, and has another 4 days to go on them. She also had metacam for the first ten days. At ten days the wound was looking almost perfect so we popped the stitch out, and kept the bandage off, 2 days later and its still perfect, i'm struggling to see which paw its on!! She's still been allowed off the lead, but with a well padded, strapped up, boot covered bandage on! Hope this helps :-) and hope your collie gets better soon :-))

Re: dogs cut his pad....

If he is walking on it OK then just keep the area clean, (clean with antiseptic if possible) and just short lead walks on flat ground for next few days. It will take a couple of weeks to heal but would be unlikely to benefit from suturing.

If it is very painful then get it checked for a foreign body/infection or deeper damage than you can see.

Re: dogs cut his pad....

Pads are a nightmare to heal as you cant really keep them rested. They are weight bearing and always moving. You may get away with a bandage, A/Biotics potentially pain relief - your dog may not wanna show that the pad hurts. If it needs closing up and you have a brave dog - Staples can be done concious if he sits still!
