I know there have been threads before on wages and I know a lot don't like to discuss them on here BUT if there is anyone who can advise me on how much a newly qualifed VN would expect to earn in SE London I would be most grateful.

i qualifed in 2009 and am only on £6.35. which after reading on here is poor. i didnt do my training were i am now but know that if i had i would be on more. so when nurse qualify after me no i know they are on more then me , which i think is wrong.

i've thought of bringing it up with my boss but its been done before by others who just say they were told you can either stay on it or go find another job.
I was on similar as a newly qualified and currently on less than most of the above wages for head nurse.

Depends what type of practice (eg 1st opinion, referreral), experience, area etc.

But imo £8 or £9 an hour is alot for 1st opinion newly qualified, sounds more like veterinary hospital / referral

Obviously london area pay more also

Re: Recently qualified QVN wages?
Sorry Suzanne, but that is terrible! How employers can consider this to be a salary to live on I don't know. It may be worth speaking to your boss, and if they do retaliate that you can find another job, well....might not be a bad thing, QVNs are in demand. From my experience I've found that its VNs who qualified at their practice may be on a lower salary than someone who didn't train there-no idea why. Possibly the practice is 'making up' initially the costs from training, or the incoming VN can negotiate a salary that they have previously been on? Either way there are plenty of practices around who are more realistic with salaries.

I know vet nursing is never going to be a particularly well paid job, especially in general practice but we shouldn't have to put up with this sort of so called wage.

I had however also at the same point taken on a lot of head nurse duties (we were a very small practice! - and the head nurse left) and I was effectively running the place. I did have to state my case before they gave it to me, but they did.

However, 7 years on I am not not sure. I do find that as a QVN in London you can often ask what you want, and usually you will get it if you can back up with experience. I certainly would not be ashamed as a new QVN to go in and ask for £19000 or even £20,000 depending on how confident you are in your work, or your level of experience. If you don't ask you don't get!

Re: Recently qualified QVN wages?
Gillian i think £7.50 would be a pretty ok wage for a newly qualified VN, however £8.50 seems low to me as a qualified nurse with several years experience
Gillian i think £7.50 would be a pretty ok wage for a newly qualified VN, however £8.50 seems low to me as a qualified nurse with several years experience, at the moment i earn £9 an hour which i think is just ok, i have 11 years experience. Previously i was earning £9.50 but had to take a pay cut as we had to move due to my other halfs job, i think id struggle to be able to live on £8.50 unless i was working a serious amount of hours which then would be pretty tiring and not much fun

Re: Recently qualified QVN wages?

As a newly qualified VN I was on around £10 per hour/£18000 p.a for 37 hours a week, with weekends/nights paid as overtime.
