I'm just watching it on 4od. Some of the info is very good, but some of the info about puppy farming etc is horrible :( I always forget things like that go on. Been in tears for some of it the poor dogs :(

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

I would NEVER let my puppies go to a shop to be sold.

I like to know where my pups are going, potential owners are (grilled) interviewed and have to show knowledge of the breed and the needs of the dog. Needless to say more people get turned away at the phone interview than are allowed through my door. At the end of the day it's a life were dealing with, all new owners have to sign a contract and I have back the dog at any time and for any reason.

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

[quote user="Kim Blowing"]

I agree...puppy farm seems likely to me!

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

I thought that was just an american thing selling them in pet shops.
Just a quick note on the flip side - and I am in no way condoning puppies being sold in shops etc etc, but at a practice I work at sometimes there is a pet shop next door and it is AMAZING and in inner city East London!

All puppies (and kittens) get a full health check/wormed and flea-ed by our vet before they are fit to be sold, they get a massive discount with us for their course of vaccines, I think they usually get their first one before they are sold.

When I locummed, a practice I was out would regularly go and health check and vaccinate a local pet shops puppies. They had a licence to have about 70 puppies at a time on sale! A lot of them would end up at the vets once sold as they were always getting ill. I think the fact they had been seen by a vet made the people who bought the puppies think that they were getting a healthy pup.

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

Just a quick note on the flip side - and I am in no way condoning puppies being sold in shops etc etc, but at a practice I work at sometimes there is a pet shop next door and it is AMAZING and in inner city East London!

She even closes for a month over Christmas to try and prevent the Christmas puppy buying frenzy. She never has more than 8 puppies or kittens in the shop and they have a massive play area!

I haven't watched the show, as I am the same as Kate and get really upset. Still trying to get over The Cove!

I don't know much about puppy selling licensing but surely it needs to be more stringent to prevent all the 'bad' shops that do not look after the little guys. I had got involved in some welfare work for a place that I cannot mention and it was horrific. Not so much with the welfare of the puppies whilst at the shop (although not excellant) but mostly with where they got the puppies from and what they did with them after their 'sell by date'. And as Tracy says above the lack of education given to the people who buy the puppies, surely this is the first point of call for a healthy happy well behaved dog with a well educated owner.

Rant over!

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

No, its still legal, but the reguations are a lot more stringent than for small furries, so many have stopped (prob also due to public perception, I suppose).

There are still a lot of puppies sold in Inner City pet shops, such as in Liverpool. Drove me mad when I worked there!....."has the puppy been wormed?...Don't know....What breed is it?...Dunno......How old is puppy?.....let me guess......"

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

[quote user="Nightshade82"]

I thought it was illegal for pet shops to sell puppies?

nope sorry it isnt - if somebody has a petshop licence to supply livestock they can pretty much supply whatever the like as long as they are licenced for various species

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

I thought it was illegal for pet shops to sell puppies?

Re: How to buy a puppy More 4 last night

Yeah I saw it and I think it was well done. I'm glad they showed how horrific puppy farms are. If only people who go to pet shops/internet/dodgy backyard breeder could see it and realise they are just supporting these awful places by buying these puppies. I'm amazed that people still buy puppies from pet shops.

I'm also glad they showed labradoodles and other "designer" crossbreeds and how they aren't all free of problems. People who breed these crosses are only in it for the money anyway and if you want a crossbreed then go to a rescue centre.
