I have to write a communication essay about a particular incident and reflect on it using a reflective cycle. I have no idea how to start or what I need to include. I've just submitted a draft to my tutor so hopefully it's pretty much all there :)

Re: Communications essay

Hiya,

I am currently a first student on the new diploma course. I have just completed the Communication Assignment. I used an incident where a client become emotional as she wasn't sure what her next step would be in regards to her pets condition. She used non-verbal communication and body language to reflect her emotion. I find this a difficult situation.

I did alot of research reading journals and books. The best journal was the Veterinary Business Journal, they had alot of articles that vets had wrote in how best deal with emotional clients. I also found alot of information in human nursing and how they deal with emotional patients. Gibbs Cycle is useful to reflect on your situation and I also found the Shannon and Weaver commincation model very useful as I used this as a base for my assignment and how to start it.

This link might also be useful for you, it is examples of other peoples assignments that the RCVS have picked out.

Also if you google the Gibbs reflective model it gives you a guide of what needs to be written for your reflection. Good luck

Re: Communications essay

It was a few years ago since I did mine but I used an incident where I was asked to hold puppies whilst they had their dew claws removed. I used this incident because it really affected me.

I used Gibbs cycle of reflection as I found it the easiest to relate to that incident and reflected on the situation.

Definately worth reading about the different models of reflection and choosing one that you fully understand. Good luck!

Re: Communications essay

I'm currently studying for a FdSc in Health & Social Care and have just completed a module on reflective practice. Think the best place to start would have a read of a few books on reflection and look at different models.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reflective-Practice-Health-Care-Professionals/dp/0335238351/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1300035524&sr=8-2

althou it's aimed at health care professionals I reckon you'll be able to relate it to your studies. should be able to get it from your library or they might order you a copy.

Good luck
