Hi Button,

Not 'condeming' buying a dog but have you thought of checking the animal shelters? You would be surprised at the dogs they have on occassions. I got Rosie from an animal shelter and she is a German Short Haired Pointer!! Depending on if you want a puppy or an adult though.

Yes I have thought about it - I will definitely look into this. I would rather have a puppy but not ruling it out altogether

Ooooh this is encouraging to hear. I just think maybe find a property with a garden/yard to start with... Cooper is actually a house rabbit but his hutch could live 'outside'

I used to work at a letting agents and know that some people can be really funny about pets but then also thinking about it I remember a few who couldn't let their properties and were completely against animals but quickly changed their minds if it meant letting their property.

I guess I will try and find somewhere who would allow a rabbit 'in the garden' and then go from there......

I need to find an animal loving landlord! Properties that except pets are so hard to come by. And not forgetting little Cooper (my house rabbit). Not sure that he'd got on well with a shih tzu anyways.... may have to 'own' seperate parts of the house/flat.

All I want is my own place with my boyfriend, Cooper and a new little shih tzu addition to the family and to live happily ever after - not too much to ask eh?

Exactly. That's my attitude too! It onlt takes one person to screw up and the rest of us suffer when we look for somewhere to rent. My landlady is really good - she has allowed us to have three dogs but all the furnishings, etc will be professionally cleaned when I go, etc.

Hehe! It makes a huge difference believe me!

I lived in one flat which was NO PETS! Not entertained at all - don't even bother asking!

I brought an RSPCA stray kitten home under the radar... next time the landlord came round I said 'You know I work as a vet nurse? Well I have a favour to ask' and whisked said cute kitty under his nose.

He couldn't resist!

Other places though, have said, NO Pets, fleas etc, and I have explained that I worked as a vet nurse, and all my pets got up to date flea treatment and were well trained.... and they buckled

Obviously, if you are going to use your job as I did, as a way to get a landlord to allow you to have pets, then you have to be REALLY stringent! No dog hairs or marks on the wall where they rub etc - I hired a carpet cleaner, and painted over all the lower walls after I left rented accommodation..... just to make 110% sure..

I've always prefered bigger dogs, I grew up with a gorgeous rottweiler and have always loved german sheppards and labradors but I have secretly loved shih tzus for ages.... not sure why secretly - I think because some people see celebs in the papers with them hanging out of their handbags like an accessory. Wrong. But they are just too cute. One of our clients is gorgeous and I met a puppy this week - oh my god. They are just so friendly and like you said - waggy. I love that they have little rounded stumpy legs.... like me!

I think I'll keep looking at properties and just ask landlords about pets. Trouble is, I do have a house rabbit - not sure the two would get on very well

Don't own one, but have nursed some lovely ones - in particular a spinal patient who was hospitalised for weeks, and she was soo sweet! I prefer bigger dogs myself, but this little girl was lovely - always waggy and happy despite multiple surgeries!

On the housing front - don't despair! I have lived in quite a few privately rented houses with pets - even some that advertise as 'no pets'. It defiantly helps if you happen to mention you are a vet nurse (or trainee in my case- it still worked lol)

Other than that try local authority or housing association??
