I used to live above practice with entrance to the flat via reception - we were broken into whilst I was there - Thankfully I was fast asleep and none the wiser!

Also had an armed robbery whilst open - I was happily mooching about upstairs! Eeek!

I'm really glad this has never happened to me. I was always scared when I was on call anyway.. for some reason I would be fine all weekend, until it got to sunday when being on my own would get the better of me! Once I was convinced the alarm went off and we were being broken in to.. I went down to check and the alarm wasn't even going off! :S Must have been a neighbours.. lol Gave me a fright tho! phew!

Bloody hell - wish I hadn't just read this thread as am on duty this weekend and due to go back late tonight to do inpatient checks. I've never been comfortable about going into the building alone, especially as the door we use is round a dark corner where the security light doesn't reach and we're expected to take dogs outside to toilet in a public area as we have no fenced off garden area so am now well and truly wound up!

We get broken into 1-2 times a year. the last time was 6am in the morning but the vet upstairs didnt here anything. (yet used to complain if any noise was made before 8am as it woke her up).

thankfully they stole our digital camera as well as drugs and money and that is what got them caught as they couldnt explain why they had pics of animals being operated on on 'their camera' and they had the book thrown at them in court but unfortunatley this is a rare event.

if the alarm wasnt on the insurance wont be vaild. it happen a few times in my job were its not been on. with ours you can trace we has switched it on and off with it being fob key.

I was in this situation myself a few years back. Burglars were taking the place apart downstairs whilst I was in upstairs flat. Police took over half hour to get there and in the meantime I had to barricade myself in one room as they were trying to break into flat.

re burglar alarms if they have one fitted but it isnt active a the time of the burglary yes there could be a problem with the insurance. We didnt have an alarm where I was and boss refused to have one fitted even after 3 break ins in 5 months.

When I asked crime prevention to come round his opinion was that it should be law for any premises storing drugs to be alarmed but sadly it isnt law

the fact that euthatal has been stolen should have police on their toes - I worked at another practice where the d/d cupboard was taken off the wall and it contained LA immobilon. I remember there was an article in the paper for its safe return no questions asked

we had an armed robbery at our branch surgery, last sept,a guy with knife held up poor nurse after money and drugs, its not nice and they never seem to catch the bastards!!! its got us all nervous now.
