as far as i remeber if you put somethng in a table it doesnt count atowards your word could.... i loved tables lots of words and no skimping on destription they are also very clear and consise in what your wanting to show.

Makes use of appendixes for standard operating procedure. Ie IV cannulation, scrub procedure, theatre cleaning protocol, surgical prep of personnel, draping procedure etc.....

I did the 4 cases and tied them in at the end concluding the care given by the practice and what best practice suggests

Orthopaedic - patella luxation on yorkie

planned - lump removal

emergency and abdominal - nephrectomy on a kitten

minor - rabbit dental, no extractions but this rabbit was having monthly dentals

Hi, I’ve done a rabbit spay, cat castrate, cruciate repair and caesarean, as my cases. My college has said they are ok as cases and i have tried to use the specification and just cover each point with just one of my cases to try and keep my work count under control.

I'm waiting my interim feedback, hopefully should be good news, also have done nursing care plan for them all and my college said that i can use the same one for each case and add into my appendix. Also i have put routine post-operative care sheet in my appendix and just reflected on it.

i have to admit it has been very shady what we are to be doing and guidance is in a grey area at the moment but it's new so have to start somewhere with it!!

Im having trouble taking all my info and research and actually writing it up. Got 4 case logs to manage, dog suture wound, dog exlap, cat tail amp and guinea pig lump removal. Just trying to make sure i cover all the learning outcomes required and discuss the case and fit it into 5000 words.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This is why im starting to hate the Royal College at mo, we were told that we were not add appedicies to our assignments! Apparently, appendicies were only to include nursing care plans and hospital sheets etc... grrr

Its the same with the word count, on the assignment briefs it says that quotations are not included in the word count, yet the Royal College say that they are! Annoying is not the word!

I've pretty much finished the SAVN 14 assignment and most people in my college class have agreed that the easiest way to do this assignment is to write all the points that is depicted in the rcvs handout and then introduce each of your cases and tie it all in where applicable. I've found as well that the only way to stay anywhere near the word count is to put a lot of things like the fluid therapy into appendices and tables as they won't count those within your final word count

Iv just finished writing the SAVN 16 assignment with a word count of 3499 lol! I always struggle with word counts and norm rely the 10% allowence and quotations, but the RCVS have stated that they dont allow the 10% rule and the assignment should not exceed its allowence, including quotations! Ahhh!

Anywho, the way iv done it is iv kept the case studies to a minimum and focused on the main points of the assignment, so the;

nursing models and frame works
nurse consoltations, and
greif and loss

as there are the points you will be marked on.

However, i have also referred to my nursing care plans within my case studies to try and get that little more info in

I'm in the process of completing SAVN16 and starting SAVN14 and was wondering if anyone else found the word count a little constraining. I just got feedback from my draft of SAVN16 stating that I had not discussed the issues fully but I found that once I had written up 2 cases and the discussion I was already up to 3500 words which is the maximum allowed and I hadn't even begun to include the third. I can't see how I can fit all the criteria asked for into that word limit? I have stripped my assignment down to the absolute essentials and am only just coming in under the word limit. Also, I know that others as well as myself are finding it frustrating waiting for the appropriate case to just happen! I have been hoping for an infectious case to nurse to complete the assignment but I never seem to be in the right place at the right time! Anyone else frustrated with this? I voiced my concern at college only to be told it would happen and thats why they'd given it to us so early. This does not fill me with confidence. What if it doesn't?

I'm not sure how you are supposed to do it but when I had to do 10 case logs as an assignment I put all the detailed information in charts that came as appendices ie the anaesthetic drug protocols used for each animal, circuits used and flow rates, items used for controlling temps, the pre operative exams (TPR) and findings. Then the essay was just the discussion about the case referring them to the different appendices. Does that make sence?

You need to do 4 different cases to cover cat/dog/exotic can be a mix of any of these i.e 2dog,1cat,1exotic or 2 cat,1dog,1exotic. My student has done a bitch spey, septic peritonitis with surgery, hind limb amputation and rabbit castration.

Although you will repeat some areas if you look at the criteria the college give you, there are lots of different areas to cover so make sure you cover some in one and the rest in others.

My student was told the main area to concentrate on was the discussion and how we do things compared to how references say we should do things.

I'm doing SAVN14 at the moment and do feel like i'm saying the same things for each case, I think they want more discussion on the type of nursing needed for the species and type of procedure, e.g abdo, ortho or minor.....but saying that it's still not easy!! x

Due to being on a course that provides 'blended learning' i also have diaries to complete to include anaesthesia, peri operative, and medical nursing. These must contain 20-25 cases of various procedures/nursing requirements within different species, and three essays for each must be produced covering various aspects. My main question is, would these same essays be acceptable to be handed in with this assignment if they were tweaked slightly? I have already covered the majority of the requirements of this assignment in my three peri operative diary essays, which leaves me one case log to find in order to cover the reminder?

As you can probably tell, im very confused with the whole of this new course. Im not sure as to why my college is having us do these essays when the Royal College require assignments of practicaly the same content?

Hi, This looks like care plan stuff. You could end up writing the same thing but try and taylor it to the seperate needs of the animal. Keep in mind the RLT model and orpet and jeffrey model. Look at the individual needs of the patient ie heat, we all know it's required but try to think why this animal needs it what will happen if it doesn't get it?

e.g. shock - hypothermic - poor circulation - low blood pressure - poor perfusion - less o2 - heart works harder - risky ga. Hope you can see what i mean.

If it's similar to the portfolio you can use the same animals to satisfy the other modules however it has to be work you have done and still has to be current. You'll have to check with your IV or clinical coach. Sorry I stopped being an assessor last september so not as up to date with everything.

If youre just writing 4 seperate case logs, wouldnt alot of things just be repeated? We also have diaries to complete including anaesthesia, peri operative, and medical nursing in which we must supply three case logs for each of different species. Could i not just use them and cover what need covering in the fourth? Iv covered an ex-lap, orthopaedic, and rabbit castrate. xx
