Been asked to do a 'talk' at school.

My daughter's class teacher has asked if I'll come in and tell the children about my VN job. Despite the fact that it's only a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds I am terrified!
Has anyone anyone done this? Do you take in any props? What do you talk about

Re: Help! X-rays go down well as well has a stethoscope.

You will get some very random questions so be prepared! I like to take a well behaved pet along when I do them. Last time I took guinea pigs but have taken mine & mums dogs to another one.

Its great for building client base to as kiddies go home and talk talk talk to their parents about their day.

Enjoy

Re: Help! I usually talk about teeth & how dirty mucky teeth can make them unwell in the future.. fleas.. worms.. diet.. how we give medicine (oral / im / s/c) I also take in some good xrays of a broken leg & some vetwrap and show the kids how we 'make it better' by bandaging the leg of one of their teddies! lol.. also I take in a stethascope and the kids have a listen to eachothers heartbeats :) print off some colouring sheets too for them.. just google 'free printable colouring sheets' and loads pop up.. I tend to hand those out after my talk!

We recently had groups of children come into my practice, and they were 4 - 5 year olds as well, it was a bit scary, but it really helped to have the tracher direct the questions!

We played 'guess the xrays' where we showed them ome interesting x-rays like birds, tortoises etc, also interesting foreign bodies (we have one of an stomach with an entire 'Kong' inside that had been swallowed whole) and also a really old x-ray of a pregnant bitch. We also let them listen to each others hearts with a stethescope (just giving the ear pieces a wipe with inbetween child!) and we put the pulse ox on their fingers, but not sure if you could take a pulse ox out of practice as they're so costly to replace!

We had theatre set up with a toy dog so they could get an idea of what goes on, but that wouldn't be practical in a school I don't think, but we just talked to them about basic animal care and how you should always be nice to animals etc! And just asked the kids about their own pets as well to get them to interact a bit more.

Oh; we also bandaged up the toy bear who was the class mascot! As he had a sore eye apparently!

Good luck though, you'll be fine, I'm sure the teacher will help you loads!
