Thats really interesting Kaz, I knew about the Gyres but didn't know about the number ratings on plastic bottles I shall defo be looking out for that next time I go shopping. Education works and can ulitmately make a huge difference. We could do with a documentry on those I expect many people don't even know about them.

I watched Gordon Ramseys shark bait a month or so ago, i was sobbing the whole way through.

I saw this was on but couldnt bring myself to watch it, i know it will be similar to what i saw on the other programme and i cant watch it knowing there is nothing realistically i can do about it. Until the gorvernments of japan/china/norway/etc change their attitudes there is nothing that will ever be done.

[/quote]

There is something you can realistically do. Be informed and then tell others, who will then spread by word of mouth. example there are certain products i dont buy because i know how these products come about., like shark finning.

Governments will listen if people are aware of what is going on. Product manufacture will suffer and loss of profits. There was so much pressure on the japanese government this last year that the japanese fisheries agent closed down the whaling season early, which is a huge success. since the doco was made public it exposed the JFA and consequently resulting in employment dismissal of workers due to manipulation and corruption.

Emma I couldnt agree more with you and to am passionate about marine ecology, even right down to plastic pollution in the oceans. 5 Gyres is another informative organisation that studies the 5 gyres in the oceans that collects all the plastic pollution from the oceans currents. the studies they have recently done on fish really scares me and to find how much plastic these fish are consuming results in death, toxicity and then ends up on our dinner plates. When you shop, look at the number on the plastic bottle you buy (Milk, sauces, salt, liquid detergent etc) you will see a number rating, the lower the number the better the plastic. higher numbers (5-7) more toxic and longer it biodegrades.

simple when the buying stops, the killing stops

Now people are finding out about it, it is more likely that it will get stopped. Although it is horiffic and disturbing to watch I think it is important that the word is spread and people are aware that this type of thing goes on in todays world. Since I saw this DVD a few years ago I have encouraged people to see it. The marine environment is something I am extremley passionate about and I think it is fantastic that a number of marine related issues are now coming to light and being talked about more openly not only the horrendous issues that go on with the dolphins in Japan but overfishing, by catch, shark finning and discard amoungst many others.

There are couple of other DVDs that are really interesting that I can recommend if you have an interest in marine life (or even if you don't they are very educational): Sharkwater and End of the Line are both very eye opening and informative. Hopefully by educating people that these things go on they can be stopped before it becomes too late...........

although I dont agree with this I personally feel that there are issues in our own countries we need to address and when we have tackled those then others may be more responsive.

Re: The cove: true stories

It still upsets me now. I'm not attacking japanese in general, im just stressing the lack of education, over fishing and the cruelty behind this act.

its amazing to know Ric O'barry who protests in The Cove actually created Flipper, the original series and has since turned on the industry to make the Cove and protest against the capture of wild dolphins for entertainment and meat consumption.

Its good to know, that since its release they have managed to educate some public (who were not aware of and rather upset) by these acts.

I can not belive that they think this is normal. I applord the lengths that the film crew went to as u say. I hope they keep showing it and get more people on board,

Mercery poisioning is no small prob, what do they think they are doing??

Re: The cove: true stories

This is one of the most interesting, EYE opening doco's i have ever seen. I saw this over a year ago and it really pulled at my heart. So much that it had inspired me to start studying an animal welfare degree. i always knew that it went on... but the lengths the creators went to get footage was truly amazing.

it sickens me to think that the government tried to cover it all up. The Japanese government doesn't educate it's people. for one example It was mandatory in primary schools for children to eat this so called "meat", inwhich, these children and their parents had no idea about the toxic levels of mercury and the side effects associated with eating it.

the destruction of these animals was so disturbing it is a must watch for anyone who wants to know more about anti- whaling.

Its good to know that the whaling season has ended early this year. however its just the beginning of the end.

The australian government and other countries will continue to pressure the Japanese and norway to stop this barbaric and senseless slaughter.

I urge all who are interested to join the facebook group "the cove" for regular updates

Re: The cove: true stories

far as i know it still goes on...absolutely disgusting
