The first one was given slowly into the drip set so definately wasn't quick! The second one just had a catheter as he kept tangling his drip - but I sat there and did it slowly and flushed before and after.

Unfortunately I don't know the batch number of the first doses as they were given in surgery so it was someone else who did it...

hmmmm might be a batch reaction then, this is why batch numbers should always be recorded against animals records so reactions like this can easily be pinpointed and brought up with the manufacturers

still amazes me how long it's taken us in the smallies world to do this

Re: Penicillin reaction!

The first one was given slowly into the drip set so definately wasn't quick!
Hi guys - I am getting rather paranoid as I have administered Iv augmentin to two dogs since friday which then suffered an intense reaction - hives erythema and trying to claw at their faces whilst screaming the place down.... both are fine after treatment with piriton and close obs. It could be a huge coincidence and both dogs are allergic to penicillin but the second dog had had augmentin already that day.

It could be a faulty batch (they definitely came from the same box )....

But of course because I administered them both my paranoid mind is making me wonder could I cause it by something I did during preparation or administration..

Does anyone know any more about this

could be a faulty batch (do you know the batch number of the first dose one of the dogs had before the reaction

also how quickly was it administered, can cause an anaphalactic reaction if given too quickly
