A few of the vets in work with me went on a course a few months ago about critical care and came back with the idea they wanted to set up a blood donor service and they put up a poster on the back of on of the doors as you walk into the waiting

Re: Setting up a blood donor service

we keep packed cells and ffp in now as we do need it on a regular basis, however pre- pet blood bank and for cat donors we offer them some free food (usually towards the £40 mark's worth of whatever they want) and that goes down well

Re: Setting up a blood donor service

The pet blood bank is over 3 hours and nearly 400 miles away from us - no good in an emergency and I'm in quite a poor area, so owners wouldn't be able nearly £400 delivery, plus the last time we ordered from them the driver got lost and it took over 7hrs for the blood to get to us!

The free vaccination is a great idea, thanks Shelly! I'll mention it to the vets on monday

Re: Setting up a blood donor service

We bought 20 blood typing kits and typed all suitable staff dogs and then asked clients with suitable sized and temperament dogs who we thought would be keen, such as one of our labrador breeders, we also have a couple of donors who themselves have recieved a blood transfusion due to surgery. We offered free vaccination for the dog if they have donated blood in that year.

Re: Setting up a blood donor service

When we had clients animals for blood donating, we used to offer a freebie, so it was giving them something back in return.

And as Sal the 1st said pet blood bank are avaible now too

Re: Setting up a blood donor service

we did this many years ago in one of my previous practices under the Holly Appeal (this is for dogs), we had a good list of donors and the way we did it was to actively ask clients with suitable dogs and later cats if we thought they would be interested in participating (we also had a retired greyhound rescue who we could call on as well). Of course all this was pre the pet blood bank - there are a lot more options open to folk these days
