I do agree that other medications should be tried first. "Chemotherapy" has a bit of a bad rap due to the severe side effects that early generation chemotherapy drugs had on humans. Fortunately, modern drugs have much smaller side effects and are very safe in animals. Some even have an effect on other illnesses. So if you've got an 11 year old dog and nothing else is stopping his atopy, why not give him a quality of life?

That said, before you go to cyclosporin, try fish oil or Essential fatty acids - yumove is one brand, i've had one owner who swears by Boots fish oil! The active ingredients you want are EPA and DHA, and you should have at least 250mg of both in the dosage. (Capsule or spoonful, depends on what brand or company.)

Other brands are of course available, I believe there was a topic on vetnurse.co.uk earlier about the best fish oil supplement for skin issues.

Good luck!

The main ingredients are:

Phytopica is a three plant extract containing:
* Rehmannia glutinosa - helps maintain a healthy immune system
* Paeonia lactiflora - supports normal white cell function
* Glycyrrhiza uralensis - is a powerful anti-oxidant and increases the absorption of the other two components

Apparently these are chinese remidies, why don't you speak to someone who does herbal remedies (Vet) see what they say.

Other thing maybe to look at some of the prescription dies RCW skin I think is based on this type of thing plus the anti-oxidents. Hope this helps?

Re: Phytopica been discontinued

Oh no! My boy's on it too. I wasn't aware that it's been discontinued.

Did you try to order it from a wholesaler? It might be worth ordering from an internet pharmacy (yes, I know, a heathen!) Just to let you know, when I looked into it, they were asking for a prescription for it.

Might be worth a go if they have any stocks hanging about?
