unless your guidelines agreed by your RPA/RPS which should be displayed in your xray room with your local rules makes provision for this it is a definite NO (even in the unlikely event this person has an xray badge?)

Re: re care assistants

Have you spoken to her college about your concerns?

Re: re care assistants

on the task list it says perform an enema...so i assume it means prep and admin enema solutions per rectum...i have queried nearly all her tasks with her, saying that most of them would be procedures only nurses or vets would carry out...really annoyed that the college have given this to students to present in practice

Re: re care assistants
thanks for the replies...would you allow a care assistant to position and take xrays?? or perform an enema??...her college supervisor is due to call the clinic this week so will discuss the task list with them...but in the meantime unsure as to whether to go over some of the tasks with her as she finishes this block release with us on fri
I personally would think both those tasks are too advanced for a care assistant. Perhaps, for interests sake, position an xray under direct supervision of VN/VS, but not take it, and certainly not admin an enema! Unless it was a 'Microlax' ?

This is for those who have/are studying the ANA course but really can be considered for any unqualified staff. Some duties i.e calculating and monitoring fluid rates and RJ application are falling into Sch3 or at least more advanced skills though ANA and VCAs are allowed to apply simples dressings as this is something that they learn during their studies.

Nursing assistants I've worked with tend to do the following: work in wards with QVNs and SVNs,

reception,

theatre and kit prep,

animal restraint and bandaging under supervision,

preparing medication (but not allowed to administer)

I do not mean to say that a care assistant is not capable of performing these tasks but what I am trying to say is that VN's have undergone appropriate training and assessment in order to become qualified nurses. I don't see any problem with general monitoring of animals and administering eye drops and tx for parasites or even urine analysis (following suitable training) but bandaging and clinical exams are too much.

Re: re care assistants

Hmmm

No idea of the legalities of any of that but where has this list come from?? Is it a recognised college? Gut instinct says those tasks are a bit borderline-nursey. (Although eye drops, parasite tx etc are all things that clients can do too..)

Our ANA does a lot of our lab work, but fluid calcs are defo not allowed (although she has been taught to do them and likes to do it anyway and check against ours, bless her..) and monitoring??? surely thats administering an IV drug in a way if she is able to change / decide rates etc.
