Had a busy day today and after working with large labrador noticed my shoulders ached and my lower back felt stiff.
I was having a conversation and laughing about how he should pay for me to go to the gym to do back exercises. I was wondering

Re: Bad Backs
The difficult thing is that alot of lower back pain is actually referred

Ah that's interesting that you say that....my pain in lower back, but chiropractor was working on my shoulders too so that must be why.

Re: Bad Backs

My back is still aching, I'm seeing a trainer on friday so see what she says about exercise in general as I have a few things I want to achieve. Hopefully a good exercise session will sort it out. This trainer I've had before and she makes you stretch loads so hoping to have a more comfortable week.

Re: Bad Backs
To be honest it all depends on what kinda of injury you have. I am currently been treated by a physio for an on going lower back/referred pain down leg, since christmas.

So maybe ask a physio/gym instructor on which back exercises would be good for 'general' exercise.
Nick is quite right - different pain or area will require different treatment and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for all. I prolapsed a disc quite marvelously about 12 years ago and after surgery i still have problems and have to be very careful. Pilates is the best all round support for lower back pain - it's all about strengthening the core muscles which support the lower spine - and yes i frequently go months without doing mine and then an ache reminds me. The difficult thing is that alot of lower back pain is actually referred pain from shoulders/neck etc so it is crucial that the 'problem' area is identified - only a qualified practioner will be able to establish this.

I think the idea of in-house pilates however is marvelous as it has so many other stress relieveing benefits as well as weight loss , posture and of course all of us could benefit form some added core strength so nothing to loose but equally expect to pay around £80 an hour for a properly trained affiliated person.

Hope your physio does wonders for you Nick - I feel your pain!

Re: Bad Backs

I'm on 24 and am already getting mild back pain. Before full time nursing I was working in a pet shop lifting 20/25kg sacks of feed a lot. I went to my mums chiropractor on Sunday and he said my lower spine is stiff so he's going to work on making it more supple again. He did all sorts to me, and made my back really click...it was nice pain!! Exercise to keep a healthy back healthy would be good!

Re: Bad Backs

sorry just didnt want anybody to run into problems. - I know how I have had to increase my cover for complementary therapies.

I would be wary of anything like this unless you are insured to the hilt in this litigious world we live in and would recommend excluding anybody with previous hx of back injury or pain - which in our job is actually most people!
Please don't take this too seriously sal. Don't worry not talking about me showing people how to do it. More in the lines of getting a qualified person.

The story goes from a little bit of banter between me and my boss as we were dealing with heavy dogs and we both were sore afterwards. I just said it would be good if at BVNA they did a CPD with an instructor who could show you back exercises. One of those non-nursing CPD sessions... ... and I just said as a caring and considerate boss, it was his duty to pay for my CPD which was my gym membership. I though it was good practical thinking..... .....he's still thinking about it!?

Re: Bad Backs

I would be wary of anything like this unless you are insured to the hilt in this litigious world we live in and would recommend excluding anybody with previous hx of back injury or pain - which in our job is actually most people!

Re: Bad Backs
Just think exercises to strengthen, support and to prevent injury would be the most useful. I bet pilates would help.

If you've got a back problem then you need more specialist stuff.

Re: Bad Backs

To be honest it all depends on what kinda of injury you have. Went to see a physio for treatment, and after could actually move again, she gave me a sheet with some exercises on. But not done them since, . I seem to get sore now and again and have that feeling 'if i move it's going to go'.

Some cpd where we all carry out the exercises would be great for us nurses . And the exercises on paper so we could show the vet's too would be brilliant.
