watch out as new drivers can have there license taken away for 6 points in the first two years of driving and u have to retake both theory and practical.

That happened to my cousin, had to retake the test and everything and his missus had just had a baby so the timing was terrible.

Speed awareness courses go on for a loooong time!!

Re: Speeding fines...

Does anyone know if attending speed awareness counts as a driving offence that you have to declare to insurers? I called the helpline today, and the speed brackets have actually been reviewed recently - so I am eligable for the speed awareness instead of the points!! It will cost me about £90 - but that's much better than an increase on my already high insurace. Apparently there is also a course available for drivers under 25 years old who have been caught doing up to 95mph!! That's only for first time offenders though... Hope that's of use to someone some day!

Re: Speeding fines...

It depends how much over the limit you were. It sounds like you were going too fast to be offered the speed awareness course I am afraid as they usually only allow for approx 5mph over the limit. The buggers don't usually let you off for a first offence, they want your money as I found out !!!!!!!! Sorry.

Re: Speeding fines...

I'm booked to go on a course in a couple of weeks. I was doing 37 in a 30 and i was only just within the bracket to do the course. I felt awful that i was caught speeding as i'm usually so good! I only got caught because i didn't know the speed limit on the road i was on and there are hardly any signs on that stretch of road. My hubby thinks i should fight it, but i'm too scared!

Re: Speeding fines...

I was really bad 103 on the A1(m). Got caught doing 39 in 30 zone. I did the awarness course which was a couple of house in a room with other offenders and a presentation on care safety. It covered other aspects of awarness and safety not just the speeding. Then a discussion and quiz at the end.

Because I did the course I didn't get the points, still had to pay the fine. I shouldn't have been speeding but I am impressed that I've been driving for 14 years - oh my god, I'm getting old.

Re: Speeding fines...

Don't think it affected my insurance too much, maybe just upped it by a few pounds (cant actually remember as it was over 5 years ago when they first went on)

Re: Speeding fines...

Also, does anyone know how much 3 points affects insurance?
