I've not had a rise in well over 6yrs!!! I too think it should go up with inflation, but sadly - it doesn't.. get this though.. every year without fail our boss gave us a few ££ for xmas - not a bonus, just because we never get a party.. he has 2 practices. When the end of jan came, we rang to see where our xmas money was to be told that one practice got it, we never.. no explination - nothing! probably favours his other practice because they are busier than we are! .. Point is - they don't have to give you anything.. although a thank you would be nice!

i have not had a payrise for nearly 3yrs! which is frustrating when reception staff had one last year. Yes the prices have also gone up but they also say there over heads have too.

I am financially worse off as my wages certainly dont stretch as much as they used to nearly 3yrs ago, but then everyone is in the same boat.

In todays climate do we just accept this and be greatful we have a job??

No worries. I think we all come to a point where we need to leave for what ever reason. Sometimes money isn't everything......

No Nick not meant at you. Just saying that I once left a practice due to pay etc thinking that it would be better at the the next job but it wasn't, perhaps i shold of stayed where i was.

Was this directed at me? If so when did I say that the grass was greener on the otherside?????

I was merely pointing out that the recession is affecting everyone not just the veterinary industry. and even those that are government funded are even been affected.

The reason I left veterinary practice was because I was stimulated to learn more in the field that I was interested and veterinary practice could not do this for me......

Believe me, the recession is affecting everyone. My partner is a cab driver and he earns next to nothing now. Will just have to wait until things get better.

I went for a job at a local CVS practice and they were offering me 2k less than I was on and wouldnt budge. Shame. I would have enjoyed working there.

As I've said before, the only way you can directly compare wages is by hourly rate. Someone could seem to be getting a much bigger wage, but is actually working a lot of hours including weekend hours and overtime.

For example, if you are on £8 per hour and do 4 hours overtime per week at time and a half, that will increase your yearly salary by nearly £2,500 !!!! 4 more hours per week at normal rate is still £1,500. My nurses work an average 37 hour week with only 1 in 6 weekends. From what I have been told, this is pretty low amount compared to most places. I would therefore hate for them to compare their yearly salary with somewhere where the nurses work 45 hours and every other weekend!

The grass is greener on the other side because it is full of b*******t!!!!

well us lot in the NHS have had a pay freeze on pay rises due to inflation for the next 2 years! also they are currently trying to stop our incremental pay rises too..... watch this space!

When i accepted this job i went for interviews at 1 other CVS practice and 5 other private practices. Both the CVS practices offered me significantly more money than the other practices in 2 cases over £4000 a year more!! Perhaps it depends on who you have looking after the region or something but as far as i am aware all the CVS practices locally pay very well.

Hmmm, I work for the same company and all of the nurses are on a rubbish wage!! I'm no where near 18k as an RVN, A1 with an Exotic Certificate, and this is after asking for a pay rise >_< !! Again, I just figured we were all in the same boat :S

Not at a what I've heard, either-directly from staff. Poorly paid, with ridiculous constraints on spending. Ie, no overtime authorised, no payrise but, like Sal said-paying out for locums, or buying digital xray. As these come out of a different budget!

I work in a very small private practice and get paid very well and appreciated immensely! Even though the boss isn't paying herself at the moment. Good employers are out there! I say change the law again and get rid of these fleecers, skimming profits off the business when they contribute nothing to the running of it!

Also from what i know of CVS they pay VERY well for vet nurses, better than most private practices that i have come across

I agree that we must look on the posiive side, there are a lot of people who don't have a job at all.

I hate to say this, as I'm sure everyone knows already, but I think its not just the veterinary sector thats suffered but the working industry as a whole. Most people haven't got the payrise they expected, if at all, and most buinesses have had to tighten the purse strings.

I'm guessing most people selling will be doing so at a reduced cost, thus in some companies eyes, this may be an ideal time to expand in some departments. I'm pretty sure they would be getting sound buiness advice from banks/accountants as these too have been affected by the ressession and won't be giving out loans easily.

And as always, be aware this is a veterinary forum, attempts at naming clinics/companies could land you into trouble. Esp if you work there. And it's a public viewable forum, so rumours have the potential to cause a lot of damage. Please be careful what you say.

Gillian is right, they don't have to give you a payrise, and if your not happy and have spoken to someone in HR, then vote with your feet. You could even have a look around and see what other places are paying, maybe your not as bad as you think. If you do choose to leave, good luck with the job hunt.

At the moment, I feel lucky that I at least have a job, and get paid, esp seeing how many people aren't.

i think thats what they are relying on that people will just put up with it and if not then there are plenty of other people out there who want work and put up with i, but as there recruitment strugling shows that does not work as people are put off from working for them.

We are not allowed to buy anything it is madness and we get given a ridiculous budget that is so tight and then they go and cut it even further it is madness.

They dont look after any of their practices are just fixated on buying more. I think this will soon start to cause them trouble though as their exsisting practices full apart.

well the annual figures should give anybody the info on how good or bad the group is doing - hopefully they will be walking the talk because if not everybody loses confidence - the vets , the nurses and dare I say the clients

whilst it is true they were recording record profits this time last year the picture in October wasnt quite so rosy so maybe they are finding times hard.

I find it hard to understand how some of these large corporates are willing to shell out money in locums to cover the staff vacancies they cannot fill because they arent willing to pay a decent wage in the first instance?

I'm kind of glad the staff in our practice were not the only ones who have recieved this letter, alot of us were thinking it was just us because we were so quiet over Christmas. I do think its a bit rude though, even though I know we aren't entitled to a pay rise every year. Oh well, I should atleast be thankfull I actually have a job!!

It does aggrevate me that this 'company' can afford to buy how-ever many practices a year, but they don't bother looking after the practices they have got! We are desperate for a new washing machine and otoscope !! And do you think we are allowed to go and buy one??? Nope!!!

With the inflating petrol prices and no rise I'm seriously having to think about the future.
