thanks for the ideas guys. i like the operation game in theatre and hunt the pet, nobody in the practice can draw so i think face paintings out and we're not going let people bring animals to it (nobody wants to be on stich up duty) and we're going to have a mini petting area with rabbits and g.pigs.

no sorry didn't say who the charity is, it petsavers, normally we support a different charity each year but since nobody could decide on one this year its the same as last year. last year we ran the london 10k, so the open day seams like an easier option this year.

We once had photos of all staff as babies, or young kids and the clients had to gues who was who.

Treasure hunts are always a winner and face painting, get your local charities involved by doing stalls with home baking etc too.

We always had a main display as well, we had the drugs dog sniffing out drugs one year, then falconery, and also horse and trap, and the local agility and obedience club.

we had an open day at my old practice, and we turned our dental tub table into hook a duck which was fun for the children! our outside stables we filled with hay and dogs could play hunt the treat. in theatre we had a dressing up section where kids could put gowns and masks and gloves on! and we had other things like letters around the buliding which made up the name of an animal!

We did pin the tail on the dog, face painting, a quiz to find the answers to around the practice.

At past ones we've done, we xrayed something daft and asked people to gues what it was.... one thing was a telephone that wasn't as obvious looking as it sounds.

Another competition was to ask all staff to bring in a separate picture of themselves and their pets and ask people to match the owner to the animal.... whoever gets most right, wins.

Just realised that Gillian has suggested similar about xrays...sorry.

Could have a prize of a days work experience/ see behind the scenes etc especially for young budding vn's.

Make sure you contact your local reps - we got lots of freebies from drug and food companies! Can then do a raffle/tombola etc.

To make sure people look all over the practice, we had a 'hunt the animal' competition - pictures of pets hidden around the practice for kiddies to find - small prize for those who are successful.

put cuddly toy animals, with drips/bandages etc in all the kennels!

Not sure if you SHOULD be doing this H+S wise, - but guess it is probably OK - X-ray some common items and then people have to guess what they are !(scissors easy, mug hard)
