Hi guys - this is probably a really silly question but how do you go self employed? As in, how and where do you find work - is it just a case of checking websites and ads?

Are 'umbrella companies' just agencies that find you the jobs and then take a cut of your pay for the service?

Assuming you can find enough work is the pay much better for locuming? I have heard of nurses that can work flat out for a couple of months as a locum and then have enough money to take a couple of months off - has anyone out there found this to be true?

I really love the idea of being my own boss but am not sure I would like the uncertainty or be organised enough to sort myself out!!

Thankyou very much..can't wait to be self employed and in control of my money! Just awaiting last payment from practice through my umbrella company before I can leave them...grr

I will let you know the details for an accountant friend of mine in next couple of days his name is Chris been brilliant helping me. I wont have chance till tuesday to sort though.

And get hell out from umbrella company you will see your earnings go way up very fast.
