Our VNAC is happy for us to sign off things which the student does on a daily basis if they are competent eg packing lab samples - they have had RCVS in and they are happy with this as long as explanantion as to why signed off.

Hope this is right as I have an EV visit next month!!!

my VNAC said the RCVS havent even finished it yet and are constantly updating it! there are loads of mistakes and is very 'human' nursing. It does seem a faff as some of the tasks are ridiculous for my student to show experience eg packing a lab sample! something she has done since level 2! There seems to be no time limit apart from not completing within a month as this they say would be impossible! I think I also preferred portfolio as the students had to show more in depth knowledge. I have assessed 8 portfolios over the years and finally thought yes I actually dont mind it, then of course RCVS change it again!

Think this was brought up on my course ages ago but we were told that it couldn't be done as it doesn't show that you have demonstrated the skill to the student directly.
Because the NPL is all based on practical experience I don't think that they would accept something written a year ago or so on the old scheme?

Maybe contact your VNAC or the RCVS directly?
Would be good to know as our transitional student could fly through!!

There are standards which you can download from the RCVS website. They're not like the old standards though which outline everything. They're a little more random and state what the students need to know, just not in a massive amount of detail.

I found it helped me to print out each VN Unit from the NPL and put it in my students file and tick off what I have demonstrated, seen back and when things are signed off as complete. It saves logging in all the time and when I'm assessing I can carry the folder and tick things off as I go

Hi all,

I have 2 students and have been told that although they can do many of the core bits when standing on their heads, it all has to be logged properly (demonstrated/demonstrated back).

To be honest - it's a bit of a faff! I have been questioning and talking it through with them and then getting them to show me (rather than find 2 animals to upset when doing a TPR).

Although there is alot of stuff open for both of them, it's hard to keep track of whats going on!! I think the portfolio was easier as there was none of this 'I'll show you and you show me then you go and log another 3 times you throw away a syringe'!!!!!

My student who is on the transitional course has told me that they also need to be doing 10% a month which works out as 33 tasks. Hope that helps.

I really wanted to assess portfolio because I felt I understood it, now cc for NPL. Think Im getting on ok with it but havnt got anything to compare it too so this worries me.

Also my student been here 10 months and i feel able to make an appointment appropriately therefore I signed her off with an explanation that she been doing since she started (she has logged quite a few different experiences) but still worried about it

My CC has opened up lots for me but not yet actually demonstrated anything, cos its all stuff he knows i can do.

How is everyone else getting on with it? have you done much. im finding it hard cos with the portfolio we had a guide on 10% a month but we dont have anything simular with this

Hi Louise, did he open all of them and did you need to demonstrate them all back to him before logging your experiences or have you signed yourself as competent on some of them straight away?

Don't know why I am having issues with doing the NPL.

Hi. I am on the transitional award and have worked in practice for 9 years. My clinical coach was told that as i have worked there for so long that he could open up the logs without demonstrating to me. this is going well upto now. Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies, have opened some of the tasks but also know that some of the tasks my student will be shown by some of the vets and other nurses, so can open them as well. Theres gonna be some tasks that my student won't get to do very often like assisting with placing a naso gastric tube.

Least my SVN is on the transitional and only has to part of the NPL.

I do agree with Laura and at the moment I would prefer to be doing the porfolio.

When you open a task do we need to write much in the box about how the SVN is doing?

Hi,

I'm doing the transitional course and have been working in my practice full time for nearly 2 years and locummed for them before that and have completed the degree. Some of the logs like putting sharps in the bin, clinical waste and things like that you do every day and could do with your eyes closed we've just opened and pretty much completed within a few days as its so easy to do, but others thats actually involve more knowledge (like monitoring anaesthetics) and things we do slightly differently to the RCVS we are doing properly and doing the whole answering questions you would have to do with the portfolio

I also agree with you, I'd much rather be doing portfolio!!

I have been in practice for 2 yearsbut we are doing them all properly as well, from VN1 LO1, demonstrate/demonstrate back, and the majority of things I have been doing since I started in practice, but I wasnt doing them the way the RCVS want them done so am glad I started at the beginning. I know we have done them millions of times before but it seems a lazy way to do it with just signing them off.

I have opened a lot of basic tasks for my student, as she has been doing these for some time. I don't see a problem with this if they are already competent in the paticular area. I think that to demonstrate the basics is a waste of my time, and hers. In general I love the npl.

I have opened up a lot for my student but put explanation as to how I have been able to do this (ie student been with us for sometime) so hopefully this will be ok.

I feel completely lost doing the NPL, does anybody else feel like this or is it just me?

I am doing eachone properly,my student is on transition course and worked at our practice for 4 years previously, most stuff she can do. But college said need to activate properly and shouldn't really be problem as most of the common stuff that they can do standing on head come sin regularly so easy to sign off.

If unsure i would check with your course provider, I don know of a vet who was cc and activated loads of things on one day with demonstrated to, demonstrated back and there npl got blocked for investigation.Best to check i feel incase causing yourself more of a problem.

Im doing my first year and even though ive worked in practice for over 5 years (4 nursing) we are still doing all, cc shows me then i show her etc. For the tasks that i can do standing on my head i just havnt logged alot of experience but have explained that ive been doing the task for 5 years so have plenty of experience.

No,I just wrote that these tasks had been shown to her when her employment commenced with us and that over the months she has demonstrated these correctly.

Hi, my student started in January too and has been employed with us for 4 months, so I have just opened up a load for her to get on and do. She was also employed in a pratice prior to coming to us.

I am beginning to hate the NPL and wish we could bring back the portfolio - never thought I would say that!!

Anybody else out there feel the same?
