Currently there is no regulatory body for behaviourists, so anyone can call themselves a behaviourist and charge what they like, and vets will refer to them as they know no better.

When looking into it myself the 2 most legit forward thinking organisations are the APBC and COAPE. I couldn't at this stage commit to another degree so I decided to do the COAPE advanced diploma, and I am 3/4 way through...It's fantastic, a breath of fresh air and i've learnt so much.

I've done various other behaviour CPD but without doing the COAPE diploma I just felt like a knowledgeable dog owner, whereas now I feel (almost!!) equipped to deal with behaviour consulations by myself. Both COAPE and APBC provide help and support once you are a member, which I think is essential, and in this industry, you'll just simply never stop learning

Re: Behaviour courses

I did a couple of distance learning canine psychology courses with Animal Care College - they were excellent. From Compass? Its designed as the next best thing to the Southampton Degree. Its correspondence only so you would have to look elsewhere for the practical side. Its 12 very in depth modules, which youcan pay for as you go along or in one go.

Also look on the APBC website- it explains about regulation etc . You should aim to do a course that will eventually get you CCAB membership.

Seeing practice with any local APBC or CCAP behaviourists will help as well. Maybe think of becoming a member of the Companion Animal Behaviour Study Group etc.

Re: Behaviour courses

I think its really difficult to say what makes a qualified behaviourist since its not regulated. years of experience a good start ;) Coap does a one year or two year course. the one year course gives you an advanced certificate diploma and costs nearly 4000.

hey there my mate can't access the website from her mobile so here is her reply thought others might find this useful:

I did the COAPE advanced diploma and was fab! It is up to date information, and has a common sense approach to behaviour cases. It's also done over a 3-4 weekend breaks away where u study at the venue ( like a weekend conference) and then go away and do the course work at your own pace, tho there is a deadline to get them in by. They also have now a mentoring scheme for new peeps who have an experienced partitioner giving u advise. Check out the new APBTC website for all up to date info on being a behaviourist.

I did then go on to do a BSc (hons) in animal behaviour luckily I only had to do the final year, due to COAPE diploma and vn, cpd etc... I didn't learn anything new on my degree course that COAPE hadn't already taught me and infact some was out dated information. However I'm glad I have my degree now there is talk that if regulation of behaviourists happens then a degree minimum is required. Out of all the courses out there COAPE would still be the one and the newer version carries alot more weight in terms of academia.

Good luck with what u decide and enjoy it!!!!

Ellie X

Re: Behaviour courses

Hi

I did a COAPE course for an Advanced Award in Feline Friendly Nursing For Qualified veterinary nurses last year that was for 9 months. It was designed to make you think cat. It made me more aware of how they feel and how they react to situations. It has given me a totally new view of our pets and how abused they are by so called doting owners. There is a lot that i have learnt from the course and now try to explain to owners what there cat is feeling and why there cat is behaving in a certain way.

My particular interest is in cats and have studied many behaviour books on the subject over the years but COAPE run very good courses some of which are aimed at owners but are also aimed at the veterinary profession.

I would highly recommend COAPE to any nurse. They have excellent tutors who know exactly what they are talking about and the course can be done online or sessions in college.

I'm really looking for someinthg between a day course and university - 6months to a year wud be fine by me!! So there is a) nothing to stop you taking referrals and b) nothing to stop you charging for them.

However, the BVNA course is best thought of as a behavioural taster - nobody is going to come out of the BVNA course with the kind of indepth knowledge of behaviour necessary to practice as a behaviourist (or, at least, not as a good one). What it will do is give you a feel for a behaviour, have an basic understanding of common behavioural problems and be able to advise clients on how to help prevent behavioural problems (may be even a bit of advise how to manage/deal with some of the common issues - it has been a long time since I sat the course so I cannot remember the modules particularly well). But a 4 day course can not give you an indepth knowledge of behaviour - any more than doing a 4 day course could make you a vet or a vet nurse.

Re: Behaviour courses

So if you do this course you cannot charge or accept referrals from other vets?
does this course make you qualified as a behaviourist?

[/quote]

Absolutely not! Currently anyone can call themselves a behaviourist; however, we are moving towards regulation in this country. Then, the expected minimum academic qualifications are expected to be an approved undergraduate degree with significant companion animal behaviour included in it (plus other practical experience). The BVNA course 100% guarantee will not be accepted but it is a good 'taster'. Check out:
