Seen some good results. Also have you tried any of the Virbac shampoos. The allermyl for allergic helps to reduce inflammation and repair cells, Etiderm has some effect with bacteria and either sebimild or episooth is for the greesy skin.

Did a webinar on the 'webinarvet' and think the details are on his webinar (Atopy), it might even be one of the free ones. I would recommend going on it cos I find the shampoos confusing but they are really good.

Re: Malassezia

Thanks for the replys.

He had allergen testing done when he was a pup (nearly 11 now) but didn't show any reactions, but has definately got worse as he got older. It has cost a fortune so far and her pet insurer will only pay from each condition once. He is fine when on Medrone every day, but when the dose is reduced to half tablet every other day it starts up again. He has had pyoderma between the pads on front feet to the extent that it started bleeding when examined. Will definately recommend seeing a specialist.

Re: Malassezia

Hi.... I've done all of the above with my dog in the last 6 months... She is a pug cross and pugs are prone to food allergies apparently and between the ages of 3-4 is the ideal age for it to show... have eliminated indoor//outdoor enviromental allergens/ sarcoptes (York lab... now called something else) with the antigen bld test.... Didn't realise how smelly/ greasy she was previously till she wasn't! Now she is on Purina HA.... keep attempting to challenge her but she's a scrounger/opportunist so manages to pick up bits of food wherever/whenever! She is on piriton 4mgs bid... have tried reducing to half bid but starts scratching after a few days, Viacution- 1 pump daily on food.... this helps protect the skin, I use malaseb now not as often as I should... she gets so cold so quickly waitibg 10mins being wet! She is only 6kg.... I think she is allergic to beef but do want to find out for definate... she's a chewer so have had to stop rawhide chews whick she has been brought up on... have really struggled to find something else that she will chew that doesn't contain food... most of the nylabones have small amts of food in them.... frozen kongs of HA and buster cubes have been nearly as good......

Using medrone only masks any problems... not good longterm... I would really try to look at any underlying problems

Re: Malassezia

Thanks for the reply.

He has had a secondary infection that cleared up with ceporex, the vet she uses hasn't done any tests, just prescribed Medrone. Saw a different vet at the same practice and he advised using advocaat to rule out mange, and to feed z/d to rule out food sensitivity, but still very itchy. They basically put it down to atopic dematitis, but for a dog that isn't supposed to have a 'doggy smell' he does smell quite a lot and after stroking him our hands are very oily/greasy

Re: Malassezia

Has he had many tests done? If he has underlying pyoderma then will probably need at least 6 wks antib's, shampooing according to instructions with Malaseb at least twice a wk (Great shampoo but often not used correctly..... shampoo and rinse once then reapply and leave on for 10 mins(contact time) then rinse well), use a good quality flea tx eg Stronghold monthly and also treat all other cats and dogs in the household, think about having blood test to rule out sarcoptes, check for demodex, blood tests for indoor and outdoor enviroment allergens (bld tests for food allergies are said not to be worth it/ true) , could be a food allergy as well.... think about trying out an elimination diet eg Purina HA... very hard, especially if a food orientated dog!, may need or respond to being put on antihistamines and using Viacutin supplement daily........ Really, see a vet with an interest in skin and skin disease (I am lucky enough to work with an excellant one who has sorted out my dog) and understand that with skin problems it often is a life long condition, alot of things/diagnosis can be eliminated but not always confirmed, it will often be expensive longterm for all tx and tests, STEROIDS/ medrone are NOT the answer.... should only be used as a very last resort when nothing else responds...... Sorry if this sounds like abit of a lecture... not meant to..... The main thing is don't just leave it... try and get things sorted/ at a comfortable level... I can't imagine being itchy / sore// hot alll day, every day

Re: Malassezia

try doing some tape strips of some of the worst areas. Stain with diffqik, rapidif or whatever you got and it will look like little dark 'footprints' or 'peanuts' has a sort of yeasty smell to it. you can also try swabbing a greasy are and smearing that onto a slide and staining it.

have you got a secondary infection going on there as well?
