I'm new to this site - but all of the information I have found so far is extremely useful!
I'm hoping to eventually train to become a veterinary nurse - but I am finding that getting experience whilst also having a full time job is getting

Re: will previous degree hinder me??
My practices are in Bury and Bolton. We take on students for work experience but you'd have to give me idea of what you want (a week/ two weeks/ one day a week etc) and then come in for an informal interview.
Thanks for your response Gillian, unfortunately I'm not a student and would be unable to get to your practices by public transport as I have no car and live in Didsbury, but thank you so much for replying.

Also thanks to everyone else for your reassuring comments regarding the degree. I'm just going to have to persuade some more people to let me gain some more experience!

Keep me in mind if you hear of anything in Manchester!

I left college and did a degree in Buisness Information Technology. When I qualified I worked for a few months in an accounts department - boring!! Luckily my job was only part time so I started working part time for Pet Pals, walking dogs, cat sitting etc to get some animal experience. I then sent letters to all the practices in a 20 mile radius. Luckliy a practice near me had a Saturday position going so I started working there for less than minimal wage. I was super keen, went in during the week for free to watch ops and help out. Then after a few months a full time job came up, terrible pay, I took a 50% pay cut! Anyway.......5 years later I am a very proud, very in debt, RVN and I have never beemn happier

I dont think that my degree hindered me getting a job in anyway, you just need to convince them that you are dedicated and willing to work for a pittance because obviously you could be earning a lot more.

Re: will previous degree hinder me??

Don't really want to take out any loans, NVQ route is best for me think!

Re: will previous degree hinder me??

My first degree was done when student grants were available (ie you didn't have to pay them back) in 1994-98.

My second degree was funded with a student loan which is a very different thing.

You can do as many degrees as you want, there is nothing to say you need to take out a student loan (although I appreciate that funding a degree yourself would be pretty expensive if you don't have access to a student loan).

Maybe you could get another type of loan from your bank, might be worth while asking them what else is available that might suit you.

I looked into the degree and I couldn't because I couldn't get another student loan. Is this not the case.

Voluntary work looks great, even a charity organisation and you learn so much. I am struggling to find a placement and I need it voluntary. I have voluntary experience and I think it shows your dedication. So hard. I am about to start full time job before my course starts and do a days voluntary at my local RSPCA shelter as they need help but also it is so rewarding. Good luck. Put situations wanted on here and check direct gov and vet buzz every day pretty much. JUst keep at it!

Re: will previous degree hinder me??

Like you I also have a previous degree in ENGLISH! I did my first degree in 1998 and to be honest it has not hindered me at all, in fact it allowed me to skip a lot of the courses in my veterinary nursing degree (eg communication) and it was a huge bonus being able to write essays and reference them correctly - really, I don't think anybody saw it as a problem.
