I've got two students who are on the new diploma course full time which means in year one they spend two days with me in practice and three days at college. After the first year they spend all week at the practice with me but are still classed as full time students so still under the wing of their college (South Staffs- Rodbaston)

From my own personal experience though I would much much prefer to have students working full time paid employment and going to college one day a week. I hate the fact my current students work hard and don't get paid for it (not up to me unfortunately). I'm finding it difficult to find them a good variety of cases in just two days and they both need the same things for their NPL so in future I would only consider one at a time via the full time route

Re: Unpaid training??

Hiya

I'm doing the Veterinary nurse course at the moment (level 3 diploma) and I am training. I dont get paid for my work and it is under voluntary work. Im not actually employed there!! I am able to do my training and NPL there as they offered me the apprenticeship. I dont get paid but I really enjoy it. A few people in my class aint actually emplyed, we do it on a voluntary basis and are able to do our vet nursing course there.

Hope this helps

I'm not sure if there are any near me that do but if you can spend most of your time in placement rather than college it wouldnt be to bad having to travel. I deff won't give up looking for somewhere. Hope you find somewhere soon katie and it all goes well!

Re: Unpaid training??

Me too Kerry, did a degree so no way I can afford to do another one. I am doing the VCA in September at Writtle College and then I automatically go onto the Vet Nursing NVQ, so for the first year (if I don't get a student paid placement) I will be doing full time college working at the hospital there but then the scary part is, I HAVE to find a 2nd year paid placement in order to do my second year. Me and my boyfriend are having to move into my boyfriends parents in order for us to save as much as possible so if I have to do the scary route then I will have some savings so I won't have to kill myself trying to do another job as well as studies and college. The best thing for you to do is to find the college where you can study for the VN and see if they have open evenings. Thats what I did and they told me the options there and then. However I am doing the VCA as I didn't get my GCSE'S Maths and Science but as far as I am aware you can do the scary route (I may be wrong though, so find out for sure), all I was told is it is all changing. It is a sensitive subject working full time for free but if you can then get in contact with your college. My VN department at college have been brilliant and I don't start until September. I know what your feeling, I thought I had my placement sorted and found out today it has fallen through so have to send off again, got 6 months to find something but it is frustrating. When you want to do something and it is so hard to get into, it is hard to keep your chin up but we will all get there. Don't give up, contact your college and let us know how you get on.

Re: Unpaid training??

Can u still train through NVQ's without doing a degree unpaid? Speak to the course provider. It's the way I trained but it's difficult if you have to finance yourself as well as work the mimimum 37.5hrs. You end up having to do another job for 20-30hrs to make end meet. That doen't include studying and revising.
