To be fair this was a filling that came out, lasted two years so not too bad. It was silver and I don't have a big smile so will be getting a silver filling again. White fillings are better but the cost of them is too steep for me at the moment.

I have quite a big grin when I smile! My premolars are really noticeable. I've got amalgam silver/grey in my back molars, but they're just normal fillings, not a big chunk of my tooth!

I have a silver crown on an upper premolar, doesnt look too bad actually, cant notice it when i smile... unless its a BIG GRIN!! and can see a hint of silver. lol

not strictly true

if you are in receipt of contributions based Job Seekers Allowance you will still have to pay the standard NHS charge if you are registered with an NHS dentist.- in the same way you will still have to pay for prescriptions, it is only when your contributions based benefit has expired that you get free scripts and dental tx.

I was in the same situation, I think my tooth was undermined by doing naughty things, like opening beer bottles-eeeek, how bad is that-you think you're indestructible when you're young!

Which tooth is it? Mine was a upper premolar, so I decided to pay the extra £80 to have a white filling, as I think silver would have looked awful. But it ended up being 4 months until I had it done, as the dentist put it off 3 times and then I had to cancel. But its been ok so far-just expect to be told off! (I did, even though it was mainly the dentist putting it off!) If you don't have the white filling, it should just be the £45 charge.

I took a chunk out of one of my incisors by holding a needle cap in my teeth (think the tooth was weakened from root canal and many dogs headbutting me) only cost £46.50 for full check up, xrays and 4 fillings

NHS Dentist Charges Structure

£16.50 - This charge includes an examination, diagnosis and preventive care. If necessary, this includes X-rays, scale and polish, and planning for further treatment. Urgent and out-of-hours care also costs £16.50.
£45.60 - This charge includes all necessary treatment covered by the £16.50 charge PLUS additional treatment such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions.
£198 -This charge includes all necessary treatment covered by the £16.50 and £45.60 charges PLUS more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures or bridges.

so unless you go private then these are the prices they have to charge
