few of my friends keep saying to wear a suit but I really dont think its needed... I never have worn a suit to an interview before...

Yes I am one of them. Why? because most of the uniform manufacturers only produce trousers and tunics in limited size range. Grahame Gardner wouldnt ever buy from them again even their made to measure, and yes the measurements were right, looked lousy on me. (I worked for corporate at the time and complained to area manager that the uniform made me look deformed - he commented that for that uniform to fit and look half decent on anybody they would have to be deformed!)

At least I can get a dress that either fits me well or is easily altered, and its a damn sight cooler in the summer - and if you are locumming and buying your own dresses its cheaper than buying tunic and trousers.

I would just feel so self concious in one, like when you are straddling rotties etc, but then again i have split a few pairs of trousers doing that too hehe

Re: What to wear???
maybe I am just old fashioned or maybe its a throw back to my school days - I went to a school where ladies were not allowed to wear trousers EVER.

smart trousers or smart skirt for interview I dont really care which but if an interviewee appeared in jeans I can guarrantee if I was doing the interview they wouldnt find themselves working alongside me unless jeans were part of the uniform. Sensible heels, no long nails, discrete nail polish if at all, minimal makeup, no crazy hair, lose the piercings, no bare midriffs (yes it did happen once!) discrete perfume (ie one that doesnt leave people gasping) and fresh breath - think that just about covers it. And the most important bit - the ability to smile!

Re: What to wear???

I agree, I have often worn suits for job interviews, or at least smart skirt/trousers and a blouse or very smart jumper.
I wore a suit to my most recent interview (I got the job)

Regardless of the job I firmly believe you should dress formal.

Particularly if we want to be taken seriously as a profession. When I was interviewing candidates, their appearance, and interview wear was hugely important to me.

Rather over dress than under dress.

Re: What to wear???
Although I do agree that your personality and interview skills are more important.

But I certainly would not expect someone to turn up in a work uniform to an interview!

Smart casual is fine though. Like some have said, plain trousers and blouse or smart sweater, and shoes (maybe not kneehigh boots, like someone suggested).

I personally use a first interview for meeting the individual, asking them questions, going through their cv etc and call them back for a second interview if I like them. In the second interview we let them work with us for a couple of hours, but never on a first.

Hope your interview goes well, let us all know how you get on x

Re: What to wear???
I never wear a suit and never have done for any interview. I generally wear an 'office style' dress + smart cardigan, black opaque tights and heeled knee high boots or smart shoes for anything formal/interview-type thing.
Agree, glad I aren't the only one to suggest interview clothes lol!
Please don't take this the wrong way, Clothes mean nothing if you don't have correct grammar. "You weren't ( I wasn't) the only one to suggest interview clothes." You can dress up all you like but if you speak that way or even write a letter to the practice with poor grammar you may lose a chance at a nice job.

I personally would not be impressed with someone coming in for a practical job where you need to be able to muck in and be considerate of the Health and Safety of the practice in a short or tight(pencil) skirt and heels which could be dangerous on a wet floor or round unpredictable animals. Fair enough you want to dress up a bit, but stick to trousers and flats and ideally nonslip ones with closed toes. Lay low on the makeup and jewelery and just be mindful that you are there to work not go clubbing.
Please don't take this the wrong way. Since when is wearing smart clothes for an interview clubbing wear?

As for the grammar, really? did you have to point that out? And please don't worry I will spell check and read over my letters that I send to the practices I apply too. And I will even get my father to proof read them too, just to be on the safe side. I don't tend to write grammar perfect in a post , so what? This is spare time for me, kicking back, a hobby. I don't care about wording or looking perfect because quite simply I aren't perfect. I come on here as I enjoy it and like to let loose. None of us on here need to read comments like this, they kick peoples confidence and to be quite frank, I don't see them as friendly advice, they're nasty and make people feel bad about themselves. So just think on. So thanks for the advice about my grammar and rehoming my dog but I really don't need it.

A pencil skirt with a nice top and shoes (ok not stilettos but a sensible heal) is smart, and classy.. a kind of person an employer would want imo, not a rough ragged individual who turnes up in joggers lol!

You never get a second chance to make a good 1st impression!!

I would ask them if they would like you to stay on after the interview to do some work, this will then enable you to be prepared taking your uniform with you............I think it also looks good shows initative if you ask when arranging the interview shows you are keen

agreed good alternative suggestion. I think generally if you go to the practice you are applying to you can speak to the other members of staff before you are ever called back for an interview. it leaves a nice friendly impression and it gives you an idea of how casual the practice may or may not be. Much better impression than just sending your CV or cover letter in the mail.
