I will be qualified with a Diploma 3 in a year and would like to do the
degree and become an SQP. As it stands at university i would
have to do another two years full time to obtain

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

Thank you to all who have given me advice.

I am still unsure if doing the degree is the best route for me or getting into practice and doing the advanced diploma. I love learning but money is a factor. I will study for my SQP qualification this year. I would like to ask why you are unsure of the qualification? I am new to nursing so very open to opinions.

THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

Any QVN can do the top up degree - and yes, I think having a recognised degree level qualification can only be a good thing!

As for the SQP - I thought anyone, VN or pet shop assistant could study for and achieve this via AMTRA?

I'm not sure I like the SQP idea tbh....

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

I personally think if youve gone this far shame not to get the degree but depends on your individual circumstances and whether you think you can complete it.

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

Not sure whether you think the two are linked but you don't need to do the degree to become an SQP - any one in practice can do this and qualified nurses (via any route) are exempt from some of the modules. It is all run by AMTRA and done mainly by distance work and then an exam at the end. So don't think you need to do the degree first.

Not sure if I understood what you were meaning but looked like you thought you needed to do them both together.

The reason being that should you decide to change direction and go into teaching or working for drugs companies for example, many seem to specify that candidates must be degree qualified. In which case it may be worth doing the degree now so you have it should you need it because I think it becomes alot more difficult to go back into education later on. Just a thought!

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

i did the degree route, and i am the only one to have done this at work, now although yes the others have all got experiance of nursing prior and during training, there is still a lot of of experance gained during the degree. plus i find it a lot easier now to keep up with cpd and new information which i can pass on to the others. i must say though i dont think it has made me any better of a nurse than the others.

Re: Is the Veterinary Nursing Degree worth doing?

Have you done alot of work placement/experience? how did you find it? i do think uni nurses find it hard to adjust to practice life after being in full time you but is obviously up to you what you choose to do. One of the nurses i worked with found it hard in practice after being in uni but it takes time for any nurse to adjust to life after qualifying.
