An employer shouldn't pay you to travel to work, these places are outside of normal work premises

I've never worked anywhere where they pay your petrol to get to work lol.. wish my employer did.. it's a 20mile a day round trip for me! cost a fortune! bloody petrol prices

hmm interesting. we didnt get offered any mileage when we were told we had to go to a branch surgery thats a fair drive away. could this be claimed back or is it only if you`re self employed / locum? was made to feel i was a trouble maker for even asking about mileage.

Everywhere I have worked would have laughed in my face if I had asked for travel to and from college as they would have classed that as my place of work for that day (same as if I was rota'd to work at a branch for a full day) I would only claim any extra trips during the working day so if i needed to nip to pick something up from branch.

Well I am just reading that if it is in your "duties" you get it. If you get a contract stating you have to go to college and gain your VN qualification would that not be included as your work duties?

Never thought of that! I got nothing for milage to college and it cost me £7.50 a day to park! Only one day a week, but still, on an SVN wage it's a fair chunk!

We get 40p a mile for using our own cars to travel to branch surgeries. I'm in mixed practicethough, so they are used to paying the LA vets mileage!

I have just checked the inland revenue website and you can claim back the last 6 years of travel. You'll need form P87 and it'll take a while to fill them all in, but I'm sure the taxman will send you a nice cheque for your efforts

You can claim back the difference through your tax at the end of the tax year, as the inland revenue allows you up to 40 p per mlile, so you can claim back the 9p a mile difference. I also believe you can backdate it for up to 3 years as as long as you have kept records as to how much mileage you have done, it should be easy. I claimed back £1000 in one year due to the miles that I did as an IV because the company I worked for at the time only reimsursed me for30 p a mile.

Legal allowance l can claim as self emp./ltd company is 40p/mile for the first 10k then it drops to about 14 not reached that just yet so dont remember but those amounts would be your legal limit.
