I also had the 'ice' thing, it would make me feel a bit better BUT I had all through my pregnancy because I was anaemic and was eventually put on iron tablets.

Craving ice is called pagophagia and is a sign that you are iron deficient, so it's a good idea to see someone about it if you crave ice cubes etc during pregnancy.

ah thanks for that will mention it to midwife, i was anaemic during my last pregnancy so is probably a good idea to check.

Re: Pregnancy sickness!

I also had the 'ice' thing, it would make me feel a bit better BUT I had all through my pregnancy because I was anaemic and was eventually put on iron tablets.

I tried all of the remedies suggested as above and none helped me, the only thing that did ease it (before the docs put me on tablets) was using accupressure on my wrists. The docs have since put me on Phenergan tabs as i was nearly hospitalised with dehydration, which do ease the sickness but not take it away, but make me feel incredibly sleepy aaaaaaaalllllll day. At least I know it will be well worth it at the end.

Everyone is different so different remedies will work for different people. I do find crunching ice helps me now but not sure if that is more of a dehydration thing. Oh and I was caught eating beetroot from the jar by my hubby the other day but i think that was a pregnancy craving lol!

Re: Pregnancy sickness!

Yep morning sickness is just a part of pregnancy, most people get it but some lucky ones dont.

I constantly felt sick for the first 14 weeks but was never actually sick, i also felt faint most of that time too. I did notice it was worse when i was hungry, so even if she can keep down a little mouthfull of a cereal bar and a gulp of water at a time, that should help at least a little.

Keep a snack with her at all times and a bottle of water. u can buy a product called preggypops or somethin like that, i dont know anyone who has tried these though or if they even work. Also make sure there is a stool or seat somewhere close as i have had lots of times when i needed to use it with little or short notice.

Just remind her that she will get through it and will have a little bundle of joy as a result, going through all the illness, tiredness and pain is absolutely worth it

Re: Pregnancy sickness!

Urgh the dreaded morning sickness!

I had TERRIBLE all day sickness with my first child for about 22 weeks (yes 22 weeks), magically waiting for the 12 weeks when everyone said it would stop ......no it didn't.

I was almost hospitalised twice as I was totally incapacitated, could'nt get out of bed as I was throwing up every 15 mins or so, was signed off work for over a month and lost a stone and a half in weight in my 1st trimester.

it was the most hellish and exhausing thing I have ever been through so I can totally sympathise with anyone who gets it. I literally tried ever remedy known to man, sea bands (those wrist things that are supposed to use acupressure to stop sickness), ginger ale or ginger biscuits, tea biscuits or dry toast to nibble on, flat lemonade, anti sickness pills from the doctor, every old wives remedy and every suggestion I was given.

Unfortunately the only thing that worked for me and for most people who have it is time. You don't want to hear that because when you are going through it a day feels like a week, but that's unfortunately true for most people. It will get better with time hopefully. If anything helped me even a tiny bit it was smelling a freshly cut lemon which seemed to distract me from feeling sick for a bit, but even then nothing stopped the vomiting.

Can't think of any other remedies except avoid greasy or fatty foods, eat something before you get up out of bed in the morning, drink plenty fluids, all the usual advice.

I was told by my midwife that even though morning sickness if awful it is actually a good sign because it shows that your pregnancy hormones are string enough to induce the sickness which in turn means that it is a 'good' strong pregnancy and likely to be viable.

Having said that, with my second child I was not sick even once so I don't know how to explain that! Thank goodness as I'm not sure how I would have got through that again with a toddler to look after too!
