I was salaried in my previous post for 40hrs per week and one weekend in 8. anything above 40hrs then that was paid at overtime. As far as weekends would go we were given 4 days off for the 1st 16hrs ie 8hrs sat and 8hrs Sunday, so in effect double time. Anything over the set 8hrs per day was paid at overtime.

I think most vets are salaried as they get other perks of the job such as car, house, mobile phone etc..... And therefore have to work that little bit harder for their wage/package.

If you are on an hourly rate, then I would check and double check!

I am biased, as last month I found out I had been underpaid for over a year! I am on an hourly rate, and had been paid for 32.5hrs, when I was working 37.5hrs - It was (despite my worries) sorted, no quibbles, with a one off back payment

I have never been salaried, so I'm not sure how it works...... my obsevations of the salaried vets at work leads me to believe that it works - we pay you XX amount - and you do any on call work plus normal hours we ask you to - in which case I would expect a salaried wage to be higher per annum than an hourly wage....... depending on the OOH work it may work out less per hour tho, as you wouldn't get overtime...

i suppose it depends if you are on a salary or an hourly rate. (correct me if i'm wrong here)

my nurses are on hourly rates, so are given lieu time of for set weekend working hours, callouts etc are overtime at 1.5x normal rate (i had to fight to get them this)

if your weekends etc are factored into your salary, if your salary is great then this may not be a concern, but if you don't have a great salary, then the more hours you do, the lower your comparitive hourly rate becomes.

as for the half day, depends if it is atrue 'half a day off' or time off owed to reduce your hours, as per previous poster.

don't know if this makes any sense, if you think you are winning, then don't rock the boat, in case they work it out lol

apparently its all within my salary!! weekends/on call are not overtime, im giving in!!!! he said i wasnt losing out, i have to take his word

That's what I thought but then I looked through the thread and couldn't see any evidence that they were (or weren't) so I wondered if this case was resolved.

Personally I would not rock the boat as it seems to me like you are getting paid more than the hours you are technically in work for, especially if you are getting paid by the hour. when i was head nurse I worked it so we worked a 35 hour week which meant we got a half day each week.

I can understand you getting bugged by it but to be honest i think you are getting an ok deal

I took it that these were classed as overtime so therefore not factored into the normal weekly working hours that are paid for

Hey No probs, I spent ages doing this sort of thing for the nurses when I was head nurse so it kinda comes second nature to me LOL

the working time directive (which is what i'm sure he's talking about) is 48 hours in a week, but I def think you are best leaving alone, just rest assured you are not out of pocket.

wow, thanku for your fab calculations, i plucked up courage to ask boss why i get a half day, apparently to stop me going over european allocated hours!!!! and all full timers get this half day (im the only full timer!) i think your right and from what he said its all included in my salary, not sure im much wiser but am leaving alone!!!! thanku for the help.

getting confused myself!! i work monday to fri 8.30-5pm, get 1 hour for lunch not paid, i have to work 1 late a week on a weds till 6.30pm, do one weekend in 3 and one weekend on call a month too, when i used to go to college it was all day on a tues, they paid me for that, when i diddnt attend college, term time hols i got a half day, but when attending college no half day, does that make sence? it has always bugged me, just not had bottle to bring this up till now, have a head nurse that i dont get on with she always on the side of management, so dont feel tht we can ever go to her, they are now asking alot more of us and things getting a bit too much, we always seem to roll over for them but dont get a lot back, just feel its time i stood up for myself, i make it that i work 7.5 hours a day and half of that is 3.75 so im losing an hour to them for nout!!

I am struggling to understand this as well. Could it be that there is a requirement to have a certain number of staff available at a given time and that they can only do this with you leaving later? The reason I ask this is because I used to work in a very large practice where you got a half day on a friday following a weekend on call - it didnt matter what time you started but the finish time could never be before 1.30 as other staff meals had to be covered and this wasnt only nursing staff it included reception as well

Can I ask if this has been going on for 6 years what has prompted you to question it only now - what has changed?

just trying to understand this, you say your working week is 37.5 hours but you actually only work 34 hours given you have a half day every tuesday and are not paid for your hour lunches. do you work every saturday or something to make up that 3.5 hours that isnt paid over and above or is the half day to compensate for doing an evening on call.

I agree a true half day sould take into account your unpaid lunch breaks etc. when we have our half days we work 3.5 hours (we technically work 7 hour days with an hours lunch) and then finish but we can only take these when we have accrued enough lieu time. But I just wanted to work out from both sides and if you do bring it up they may bring up that you only work 34 hours a week technically as they give you a half day every week.

If this helps, when i have a half day i start at 8am and finish at 12. I would usually be working 8am til 4.30pm that day. So i would say your right and that you should be going in your half day at 12.30. Hope that helps a little.
