Just wondering what your views are. Was it the right decision?
Do you still love it? or have you gone back to vet nursing?

The other way to do it would be to be employed as a theatre support worker and then get the hospital to sponsor you but apparently but there is no guarantee when they would sponsor you and they also have a waiting list of internal people wanting to do the course. As I said earlier, there are approx 8 people for every course place which includes internal applicants, so you might get a job as a TSW and not be able to train for 8 years or so as other people were in the 'queue' before you.

I miss the animals and the owners, but that's about it!!!

Love working in a hospital and love learning new things. I am considering switching to becoming an ODP if any suitable positions come up!

Re: changing from veterinary to nhs

Laura I have 6 O levels, 2 A levels, the stupid key skills maths I was forced to take by a VNAC because they didnt accept the recent HND or the ancient O and A levels, and an HND in Animal Management.
You need NO nursing skills to become an ODP. I don't want to be a human nurse on the wards (animals I am happy to spend hours with, but not humans lol) so you can take a Healthcare Assistant 2 year new version of the NVQ, or the Peri Operative version which we're waiting for it to come out as they're lagging behind the VN world of revaming the NVQ replacements.
With an ODP qualification (either at college or via the new OU course which I'd like to do), you can specialise in anaesthetics, scrub, recovery or just general ODP work. You work alongside qualified nurses sometimes but also directly with qualififed registered surgeons and anaesthetists.
Have a look on the NHSJobs website and look for theatre support workers which is the lowest entry point and which is my current job position, and I got it due to my experience in veterinary operating theatres rather than any qualifications.

Miss the animals and my old colleagues, but still absolutely love my new job so no regrets at all. :)

Re: changing from veterinary to nhs

like several others on here I do both.
I would still love to do Vet nursing full time, but there's no places to train students any more, so it looks like my dream has gone.
I still wokr part time in a charity vet clinic which I love.
However I've also got really involved in my job in the operating theatres for the NHS - and if they offer me the chance to do the ODP (Operating Department Practitioner) course first then unfortunately that will be the end of my vet nursing career.
I want to progress as high as possible in whatever career I specialise in, and curently there's no way I can become a QVN......

sad, but unfortunately the changes to the training have made it totally impossible to get a job locally
