It is worth keeping an eye on the political situation re: university fees and student loans. It is all up in the air at the moment. I don't know what will happen to Diploma fees (all universities, not just Harper Adams) for new entrants when the changes to what universities can charge for courses come in. It is worth enquirying with the universities as this might influence whether you start straight away or delay a year. Freedom to increase fees comes into play in for the september 2012 (I think!) intake but I don't know if this applies to diploma students as well as undergraduate students (my instincts tell me it probably will but I don't actually know this - worth asking though given that f/t time annual fees are predicted to at least double!).

I also believe that the government is considering extending the student loan system to include part time learners (the details are not in place yet though) with a view to you not paying anything (tuition fees, etc) until you are earning £21,000 a year. Then you pay 9% of everything you earn over £21,000 back until the debt is clear (or wiped out at retirement age/65yrs). I don't know how this will affect people whose employers are paying for the course. For VNs though this may actually mean that you pay very little in reality for your training (vet-nursing degree and/or university-based diploma) as how many of us are actually earning as much as, or much more than, 21,000 p.a???

many thanks for the info will look into it as well as planning on continuing study after qualifying.

Thanks again

Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing

The Course

Nurses who hold the Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing are regarded as being highly qualified by the profession and are therefore highly sought after. The course is designed to be modular and complement your clinical interests by the provision of a number of core and optional modules. A flexible approach means that you can continue working and study when it is suitable for you. You can choose how quickly to progress through the course. The course is part time, and teaching will be by distance delivery. There will be up to one study weekend a month, to include Friday and Saturday, depending on how many modules you choose to study at a time.

It is also possible to combine the Diploma with the BSc (Hons) top-up degree.

Core modules include Evidence-based Nursing, Research Skills for Veterinary Nurses, Applied Essential Physiology, Law Ethics and Professional Practice, Systematic Delivery of Nursing and the Research Project. Three optional modules can be chosen from Small Animal Surgical Nursing, Small Animal Medical Nursing, Anaesthetic Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging and Infection Control. It may be possible to include a module giving the AMTRA SQP qualification.

The Future

Successful completion of the course provides you with an advanced qualification as evidence of your knowledge and nursing ability. You will be entitled to use the post-nominal letters Dip AVN. The veterinary nursing profession is advancing and there will soon be an increased requirement for highly trained, competent nurses in practice. The Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing is an industry recognised qualification and enhances employment opportunities, particularly in the referral field.

Entry Requirements for 2010

You must have a veterinary nursing qualification that entitles the holder to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as an RVN, plus a minimum of a year in veterinary practice after obtaining this qualification. Entry will also be determined by an informal interview and short assessment.

Application

Please apply direct to Harper Adams University College admissions: admissions@harper-adams.ac.uk

You can pay for it per module so can spread the cost. It is a lot of work so you need to be sure you have the time for it. Harper one works out at about 1 Friday and Saturday per month, but then lots of online study/assignments etc. I am really glad I am doing it and no second thoughts. If anyone wants anymore info let me know.

Re: anyone doing/done advanced nursing diploma?

the harper one is hard o find on the website, but its there. I looked under undergraduate, then animals, then advanced dip. I know someone who is doing the Myerscough dip and really enjoying it, but its too far for me. I think only Myerscough and Harper are recognised by RCVS??

Re: anyone doing/done advanced nursing diploma?

I'm doing the RVC diploma at the moment.
